Interesting but somehow I'm not surprised!

Cholesterol/Vit D connection - I'm guessing that we are relying more on gut absorption of vit d than sunshine nowadays - even 'tho it should be only 10%. (90% expected from sun - as if lol!)

thanks for the link, Jane :D

Hello Rod could you please advise the best form of vitamin D to take?

To be perfectly honest, beyond the widely recognised use of D3 rather than D2, no I can't!

I use a very ordinary capsules of D3 in oil product. But I have seen so many variations such as sprays, tablets, etc. and really have little to base any decision on.

Ok Rod thanks for that information so I need to be looking at D3 then?

Yes.

I buy mine online, have a look at my profile for more information. Products are readily available in the UK.

The capsules I have at present are 2400 IU but if I wish, can always take two!

I'm told that the best form is D3 + K2, I pop a 1000mg every other day (with food).

I certainly have seen quite a few places suggesting that K2 is important - but it does still seem to be under investigation and discussion. Might depend on our individual gut floras.

I hope not! That would be a B-I-I-I-I-I-I-G dose.

1000 mg would be 40,000,000 IU!

(1 mcg = 40 IU)

I think you might mean 1000 IU. Is that right? Or do you mean 1000 mcg - which would be 40,000 IU - so still a very large dose.

Whoops, yes 1000 iu.

Bearing in mind that K2 is a necessary vitamin too, and not the easiest thing to get in to the body just from foods (although I could almost live on Jarlsberg cheese given the chance!), also gut absorption issues is something hypothyroidism seems to go hand in hand with; add on the potential for calcium deposition is very real and very common, however caused, I don't take the risk, and take the Vit K2 too!

Although the same mechanism, it is calcium deposition in the arteries I was meaning and more worried about, and K2 is one way to reduce this potential.

Generally this article is good, but overall Jack Kruse is someone you always want to double check though... some cranky ideas, usually come via someone else's thoughts first, so you need to check that's what they actually said first!

probiotics also modulate your immune system. Perhaps another reason people are low on vitamid D these days is the belief that sun and fat are bad for you so people avoid them. Sunlight increases our vitamin D levels and many nutrients like vitamin D are stored in fat. Am I right in thinking that vitamin D is made from cholesterol? So maybe lack of sunlight could cause raised cholesterol levels too?

I'm very into my probiotics at the moment - unpasteurised milk, miso and apple cider vinegar.
