Why are my fingernails lifting from their nail beds? Fingertip down.

Hi everyone.

I have been doing really well again since adding in the vit B12, complex B's to my Erfa and vit D3 schedule.

However in the last week i have noticed my fingernails lifting away from the nail bed -finger tip down. This is on my ring fingers and little fingers on both hands.

I have been gradually reducing my thyroid meds since being on the vitamins B's protocol. So have dropped from 6 grains to 3 1/2 grains of Erfa. I am amazed by this! I have nver been able to reduce my meds so low before.

As far as I can see fingernail lifting especially when it is on more than one nail is associated with hyperthyroidism so have been assuming my thyroid meds are still too high. Other causes are fungus infection (my nails look clean pink and healthy so don't think this is the reason) or a trauma (unlikely on four fingers.....?)

I'd be grateful for anyone else' experiences and suggestions.

Thanks.

It's called plummers nail. Caused by hyper, it will repair itself eventually when you are optimised :-)

Like you say I think you might notice trauma to four fingers.

I have Graves (hyper) and went through a spell where my nails flaked and split so much that they were right down to the nail bed - couldn't have got any shorter and still they flaked and peeled and my fingers were absolute agony, just so painful to touch.

I managed to get them more normal by using OPI Nail Envy - Sensitive and Peeling, as directed as well as massaging in almond or whatever light oil I had around sometimes I used Argan Oil, sometimes Bio Oil and I used Aveeno Oat hand cream too.

They are still short but the aren't flaking any more and they no longer hurt thank goodness.

Thanks Tlady & Liz for the info. My nails have stopped hurting since I dropped my dose further. Am hoping this means am on the right track.... I will try the products you mentioned Liz. -thanks. :)

I suppose the good news for me is that I now know the B vitamin supplements that I've been taking for a number of months are working & are very effective at helping my body to get very good uptake of my thyroid meds!! :)
