I've been taken 150mcg levo daily for some time now maybe about 10yrs, over this period I have put on 3.5 stone in weight and as much as I've dieted and excersied no weight comes off, I get my levels checked when ever they are due to be checked and they always come back stay on taken 150 daily, I'm wondering if its the levo that's making me unable to lose the weight.

I would doubt that. It's far more likely to being under-medicated. And, I have to say, dieting and exercising is not helping! Not everything can be fixed by going to the gym.

Do you get copies of your labs? If so, go and ask for them. It's your legal right to have them and it could give you a good insight into what's going on. Just because your doctor says they are OK, doesn't mean they are. Don't trust doctors farther than you can throw them, they tell you what suits them, not what suits you.

Hugs, Grey

Weight gain is a problem for me as well. I am four and a half stone overweight. I had various blood tests results today including my vit D levels. I discovered that I am severely deficient in vit D. I also discovered that low levels of vit D can also cause weight gain. Might be a good idea if you get yours checked? Also because weight gain is a huge problem for me I have also learned that high cortisol levels can block the conversion of T4 into T3 and that could also be why perhaps you are not losing weight. I wonder if you could also try T3 with your T4 or NDT instead?

These are just some of my thoughts.I hope they help.

Dr Lowe said that in his experience people on levothyroxine alone are typically unable to lose weight.

Many trials have been done to compare the effect of Levo (T4) against T4/T3 or Natural Dessicated thyroid and almost always the conclusion is that there is no clinical difference. Yet I would say that frequently 'further observation' reveals that one certain effect which does not actually form part of the clinical result is: weight loss reported by those who are on the T4/T3 or NDT, but NOT by those on T4 alone.

I have been trying to find some of these trials but have not yet. In particular I'm not sure if it is still possible to see Dr Lowe's information, perhaps someone from Admin might be able to put a link to Dr Lowe's website? I'm not sure if it is still available now, since his death.
