Has anyone ever experienced a sort of tightening or pressure pain, in the thyroid area,the sensation is like having a scarf too tight around your throat It`s really strange, could it be stress, I`m under a great deal of stress just lately. Hope you can help.

Yes, before I started on levothyroxine. When I mentioned it to my GP and the endo, they looked at me as if I was crazy. I started noticing it when I was doing any kind of exercise or activity beyond walking, as well as when I was stressed or upset. It was like pressure front of my neck and I felt like even breathing was more difficult. It would become more and more uncomfortable and my face would turn bright red and start swelling up, and I often became dizzy. It improved quickly after I started taking thyroxine, and now rarely happens and when it does is no more than a mild sensation.
Do you feel like your meds are at the right level?
I think my meds are at the right level, I`m prescribed 150 mg Levo, I perhaps need to mention this to my GP, and bring my review forward. The feeling doesn`t last for long, but when it does it`s quite scary.

I have this all the time when un- or under-medicated. I have mentioned this to GP and endos, had ultrasound and an ENT appointment. The diagnosis was acid reflux and I was advised to get some Gaviscon! I am absolutely convinced it is thyroid related.

Hi Antsenomad, I think you and Crabby are right (see above posts) and I am undermedicated. You both have suffered the same symptoms of pressure pain. Have you resolved your problem, and did the GP/endo raise your meds?
Like yourself I was diagnosed with acid reflux, and prescribed Omoperazole, and am still getting this pressure pain, so it has to be undermedication for my thyroid.

I have this and this is how I 1st found out that I have a growth there ( Nodules ) which were operated 30 years ago. Because of this strangulation feeling I went to doctors in November and it was discovered from Ultrasound that my left thyroid is full of nodules now too. It is because they are swollen and press against the windpipe. I am having my surgery on 24th June and then I am thyroid-gland-less . Then the merry-go-round starts with the medication as I never had any before. Good luck and have it checked by ultrasound scan as they might be full of ( I may add NOT sinister) growths and needs to come out. I couldn't put up with the feeling as if someone was holding their hands around my neck :o(
Hi ThyroidHell, The symptoms you describe are just how I feel, thank you for the advice. i`ll see the Dr and explain,hope she doesn`t fob me off. I wonder if I can get it done privately, and would I need her consent?

I am sure you can have it done privately , I did 30 odd years ago due to the fact that the company I worked for had a private health scheme for employers.

Prior to my total thyroidecotomy, I had compression to both my trachea and esophagus due to a multi nodular goitre. The syptoms of being strangled etc., were mild to begin with, but gradually worsened as the goitre enlarged........most of which was not visible. The doctor that I had 10 years ago was useless. He thought I wanted referring to a consultant for cosmetic reasons, because of the slight bulge in my neck. I was horrified when he said this. I said NO, that is not the reason, and told him that I wanted to know why I am having trouble swallowing food and breathing, and also why the goitre seems to be growing larger.
You need to push your gp to find out what is wrong, and get him to refer you to a consultant.
Even now, 10 years after my op, I cannot wear close fitting sweaters etc., around my neck.
Thank you for this, I am due for an MOT vey soon, so I shall definitely be discussing this with my GP, it needs sorting pronto.

Annie I know exactly what you mean. I had my right thyroid moved because of this and now the same on the left. Although it does not show outside my GP called it an 'iceberg' effect as it grows inwards therefore pressing the trachea. I also started to experience tablets getting stuck in my throat , if I sleep on my back I wake up gasping for breath and odd sensations just before I fall asleep when my neck presses against the pillow ... it simply stops the air going to my lungs freely.

I was going to croak it because I really struggled breathing.
Best wishes for the op in June and a speedy recovery. I had a quick recovery and was back at work 3 weeks later.......I was so bored at home lol. Scar is hardly noticeable. Make sure if your voice is still very hoarse and not improving, you get your vocal chords checked out.
I had this sensation too, before I had my thyroid gland removed. It felt a bit like there was something stuck there when I swallowed and when I laid down in bed it felt like I had a scarf tied tight around my neck! Not a very nice feeling. I had two goitres and half my thyroid removed first and then after a second lump (both benign) I had the rest of my thyroid removed. I have been taking thyroxine ever since obviously and for the last few years once my dose was stabilised I have led a near normal life with only mild symptoms if I over do things or neglect my diet.
When the consultant signed me off, he did say however that if these goitres (even though they were both benign) were left there is some evidence that they could have over time become cancerous. I don't know if there is any truth in this, as he was talking to his student doctors and not me, but it would definately be worth you asking for an ultrasound to see if you do in fact have a goitre.
