Hi all,

I got my results and its cancer papillary. They are suggesting another op to take out the other lobe now. I had the lump removed a month ago which I now know was cancer. Its crazy to think I had/have cancer and didn't know. The surgeon doesn't think it's spread and that taking the other lobe and then possibly having the radioactive pill will treat me. It hasn't really sunk in. Hopefully that's it and no need for further treatment.

He upped my meds to 150, I was on 50. Hoping this helps me feel bit better, I'm OK just exhausted but I was before operation so thats not new.

I had exactly the same in 2019. Didn't know I had cancer (Hurthle cell follicular) so they took half my thyroid and then remaining half taken too. Had RAI pill and things we're ok till Dec 2020 when my thyroglobulin levels changed and scan showed a small cancer deposit neat original site. Now waiting on details of next op in the hope this will finally sort it. Good luck with your treatment - hope all goes ok. Are you in the UK or USA as treatment programmes may differ in- I'm in the UK x

I suppose the good thing about not having a thyroid is the checks will highlight the cancer If it comes back so it can be taken out and not affect lifespan. Sorry that yours has come back, I'm glad they found it though.I don't know how long I've had this cancer. Its apparently the papillary one and considered treatable. I just want it sorted and to move on, but thats what everyone wants im sure. I don't know next operation date yet. Or if I will need a radioactive pill, I hope not.

I had the same procedure 20 years ago and apart from medication issues it has worked for me. Best Wishes for a speedy recovery.

What were the reasons for recommending removal of opposite side of thyroid? How large was the tumor?, was it encapsulated? Are you young or older? It would be worth asking the clinical reasons for recommending removal of other side. I had pappillary thyroid cancer. No RAI and still have one side of thyroid, no further cancer problems since surgery more than 10 years ago. Everyone is individual but important to understand reasons and feel you've been involved in the decision.

It's not always 'simple' to live without any thyroid. Good luck.

The left side was over 5cm but encapsulated and they think they have removed the cancer. They want to check right lobe for cancer and apparently my surgeon said that by removing the right lobe ensuring it isn't cancer and then having the Radioactive pill is the best and safest way to make sure no cancer and also Continue to monitor going forward. As I have hashimotos its almost impossible to check right lobe using FNA. I would rather have no thyroid and have the pill to kill any cells that might have strayed. They don't think there's been a spread as my left size was encapsulated but the best way to check is with body scan after Radioactive iodine to be 100 % sure. Im 33 so I'm young. I have follicular variant of papillary. Apparently it's the most common with 9 out of 10 patients having the type I have.

My left love was encapsulated but showed minimal invasion so the right lobe was removed and I had RAI pill. My follicular type is hurthle cell variant and doesn't react as fully to RAI. Apart from some issues with medication dosage I've been ok for 18 mths but my thyroglobulin has started to rise and a small hot spot shows on last scan so I was booked for an op to remove it on 11th May . This is now postponed as surgeon is unavailable so waiting for a new date. Like everyone here I just want it sorted and the cancer gone. Good luck with the rest of your treatment. X

Does that mean we have different variants as mine is follicular variant papillary? Apparently 9 out of 10 people have this type. Yours is Hurthle cell and that's different is it? What's minal invasion? Its a shame that the RAI didn't get it all.

I hope you get your surgery soon and can know all the cancer is gone. Its very worrying isn't it. Xx
