STRESS & IBS

new to the forum, but have had IBS for many years. I see it is like my brain in my stomach responds to adrenaline surges. Can be travelling, shock, stressful situation, even criticism. This kind of shuts down bowel movements, causing extreme bloating, tiredness, unwellness feeling and leads to constitution, which compounds effects. Only thing seems a couple of days resting up not doing or thinking ... great when self employed!!!

Anyone else have similar problems?

I find that travelling long distances does make it worse.Stress is a major factor I believe.I have gone onto Lacto-free stuff and have found it seems to be helping me but may not work for others...

Sorry to hear you have the problem too, but glad its not just me. I have heard about lacto free may be helpful. My son has problems which are made worse by lacto foods, he just struggles to deprive himself of favoured foods and treats! Stress also sets off his

IBS D. Hard to accept our sensitivity. Book written about Highly Sensitive People by Elaine Aron is worth a look.

I think it is rather akin to the practice of mindfulness, also proven to be beneficial in reducing stress. Persistence and practice as kerrym212 suggests. I will engage again with my beneficial routines. Best wishes for your recovery.

Yes, I would also include that for me. I have found that cognitive behavioural therapy type restructuring of my thoughts does help . criticism wounds sensitive souls doesn't it.

Hi all, I am new to this site. I am been suffering with IBS for 10years now. It is mostly triggered off by stress. Certain foods like too much wheat etc trigger this off too. I get very bad cramps and bloating, back pain, headaches, depression, sometimes I get hunger pangs but know that Im not really that hungry, my stomach makes funny noises when I lie down, i'm always constipated. I have been taking Mebeverine which has helped with the pain for a short term. I take Lactulose to help my constipation.... I have been told my doctors that they cant do much for me. Which is not so great news! i have changed my diet. I have more fruit, veg, fibre and pro-biotics but too much of these trigger of my IBS too. I started to try Yoga, exercising and reducing stress levels. However, I can't exercise much when I am suffering and at times I am exercising the pain starts again. This is really affected my life... especially socially as I feel I cant do what I would like too. A few years ago i had a diverticulitis which caused me alot of discomfort.... I was told that this was triggered by IBS and can be quite scary as it was on my bowel and can block it.

I am 28years old and got married last year... I have a very busy life and my health affects my career and relationship. I find it hard to relax and avoid stress. Sometimes I cant sleep. How do you avoid stress and relax? I do have a lot of stress in my life which I can not do much about other than try and ignore it.... but I cant keep doing that. I am the type of person that can bottle things up and dont like confrontation. I feel like no1 will understand what a person who has IBS goes through unless they have it themselves.

I dont know what else I can do to help myself... i have no energy at times and always tired... it feels like an effort to try something new...my motivation is going... feeling fed up!! I wish there was a cure to fix IBS!!!

Dear RubyN, not a quick fix for you that I can think of, apart from speaking kindly to yourself, your body and your poor old stomach! Longer term, and I am speaking to myself here too, would be to get some assertiveness training. I notice that I can fail to put clear boundaries between my own needs and what others expect, ask, want of me (and I will admit that I can volunteer probably when I shouldn't - bit of an approval addict, and 'mother hen'). This can lead to depletion of my own resources, taking things in to myself (its called being a 'stuffer' ) instead of saying 'whoa there, I'm not superwoman you know'! Depletion is a cause of depression if you get too depleted.

So, it could be for you, as in my case, my IBS is an artefact (resulting factor) of my not living true to myself and my needs (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) rather than the prime cause of my sufferings.

Does any of this ring a bell I wonder? Very best wishes to your coming out of where you are. Xx
