Hi I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions about the best fruits for IBS C, preferably in causing a laxative effect. I’ve heard that kiwi is supposed to be good. Has anyone found this has helped?

Many thanks

Hang in. After years and years of chronic and severe IBS-C then , the last several years of IBS-Mixed , i am finally getting relief w FODMAP diet AND Iberogast AND probiotics AND regular walking. Possibly these variables have all, or nothing, to do with one , or some combination of, the aforementioned. The FODMAP diet helped, tho it (apparently :so far), was aided by Iberogast (Bayer company. I get the one from Northern Vitality (google it) and probiotics. / Re fruits Kiwi helps me w IBS-C , tho when i eat to many kiwi, I get IBS-D. Look at FODMAP recommended servings sizes and avoid the fruits listed as high FODMAP (“knowing “ which fruits are on the list is NOT intuitive. Before the program I was eating 3 and 4 apples a day and they are high FODMAP. You Tube Monash University FODMAP video is good overview . Spoonful app is also very helpful). Best of luck! This is a challenging disorder (understatement:) beh

I have IBS -D so have to be very careful with fruits, but I have noticed that there are a few nice fruits on the low Fodmap diet list (if you do the diet?)

These fruits always made me 'go' in the past, before IBS. I noticed they had a slight laxative effect. Those are blueberries, oranges, grapes, raspberries. I didn't suffer from real constipation before IBS years ago. My gut was really healthy then, but there were days I needed a slight boost to 'go', so those fruits helped.

I used to really like tinned prunes too (I may be the only person who does! Sadly I can't treat myself to those any more), but I've heard prunes can be troublesome for IBS-C and sometimes cause pain. Plus, I don't think they will be low Fodmap.

But I also found that though many low Fodmap foods are great for me and have become 'safe' foods, there are some I can't eat, but there are some high Fodmap foods that suit me too in moderation. So you have to feel your own way through -what suits you and what doesn't.

Hi Limonana, I have suffered from IBS -C all of my life, I am now 67. I used to eat a lot of fruit until I realised that I have fructose intolerance, which can actually cause chronic constipation. I have had some success with the low fodmap diet and have tried to introduce low fodmap fruits like blueberries and raspberries, but I cannot tolerate them even in small amounts. I take a strong probiotic and use psyllium husks as a source of soluble fibre. I still has some painful gas and my bowel movements, although not perfectly regular, are as good as i can get. You may be able to tolerate some low fodmap fruits, you really need to try an elimination diet to find out your trigger foods. I recommend, that you try a supervised low fodmap diet there are dieticians who specialise in it.

X2 kiwi a day, people swear by it x

Yes Kiwis, Apricots (dried or tinned - I prefer tinned ones) and bananas are good.

2 kiwis, 90g raspberries, 2 hard pears, dried apricots, 1 orange, 8-10 prunes - these are all high fibre fruits. Oranges also contain a natural laxative.

With my IBS-C I am basically fructose intolerant. I can, however, eat applesauce, pears canned in heavy syrup (must be sugar syrup, not fruit juice), and plum tomatoes. If I try anything else, I get intolerance symptoms. For constipation, I try to eat 1/2 cup canned pinto or black beans along with tablet Alpha-galactosidase, raw carrots and cucumbers marinated in vinegar, 1/2 cup broccoli florets, green beans, spinach.

I have IBS-C. What honestly helped me is getting on an antidepressant and anti anxiety pill. I eat kiwi and have Greek yogurt. I also have apples.

Hi timster73, I read your post with interest. I think my IBS-C came about due to my anxiety, Iv tried antidepressants but couldn’t tolerate the side effects. Would you tell me the the name of the anxiety pill you take. I now think my IBS is causing more anxiety, a vicious circle now 😕

I take Paxil 40mg. You have to slowly increase dosage as you can't start at 40mg. it helps anxiety. Also, I was put on a low dosage of seroquel starting at 25mg. Stay on the seroquel, which helps with anxiety until buspar kicks in. In the meantime, I was put on buspar 15mg 4 times a day. It takes awhile for this to build up and that's why I was put on seroquel. You really have to be very patient. It took me 5 months to get where I am now. I have IBS-C very bad due to bad anxiety. The anxiety causes depression so you do need to be on some antidepressant. I'm also on lamictal 200mg which is a mood stabilizer as I have bipolar.
