I get sharp twinges in my sides, mostly right side before during and after my time of the month so I eat ice cream too and wen I do it hurts so bad, I had to go to the emergency room it was that bad but they couldn't figure it out (smh hopeless) I cant see a dr at moment as it's not an emergency so it's a phone consult and that's it 10 mins each appointment is so u have to go through what is wrong with u worst thing I always mention 1st and by the time I've done that she only has a couple of mins to give me a diagnosis, how hard can it be Doctors and Nurses out there smh my twin has symptoms too now that's freaky lol no in all seriousness I think all drs n nurses should b knowledgeable about this, I don't get why they don't know. Rant over but do any ladies get they pains in ur side wen its your time of the month? U don't need to answer if you don't want people seeing ur comment, much love hope everyone is getting somewhere with IBS or IBS symptoms gl and tc

Hi, I have had IBS for over 35 years now, daily for the last 30 years. It used to be worse when I had a period and at ovulation. Menopause was a rough time as well! It has also got worse since getting old (64 now)! Hormones have a lot to answer for!

I totally agree. I'm going through the menopause and just been diagnosed with IBS in December last year. I'm using the low fodmap diet and over the counter meds. I'm totally fed up with it. Just want it to go away 😕

Oh god so if it is IBS I'm living the rest of my days in pain (most of the time) I cant understand why drs dont know all this stuff, I'm defo going to complain till something gets done, my drs usually really good but I can only talk to her on phone as not an emergency, bleeping jk to relieve my pain I put down a cushion and lean on it but doesn't always work, my twin sis gets the same pain but not as frequently as me, GL & TC hopefully it will be over soon and thank you very much for answering my question, it really is appreciated wen so many dont want to talk about there menstrual pain (not cramp) stay safe xcx

Hi Cher. It is pretty common for IBS pain to either appear or get worse during periods. Out of interest, what has your doctor actually said? Did they tell you IBS or did they just give a non-committal answer? They should at least be organising tests to make sure it isn't anything else. There isn't any reliable diagnostic test for IBS, so the only way they can diagnose you is by ruling other gut related symptoms out. Take care x

Thanks, no they sent me for a scan but that was it, they all looked baffled by the pains I'm getting and there was no diagnosis or other tests, I'm going to say to my dr again & maybe I'll get somewhere this time, thanks for answering me much appreciated xcx

Well at least they sent you for a scan. Try to get them to do a full blood count as well, in the UK it should be standard practice, but I'm not sure what the procedure is elsewhere in the world.

Thanks I'm hoping to get an actual face to face with either a dr or nurse I mean they want to do my asthma review in a phone call its baffling 🤞 they see me in person.

I am way past the menopause now, but I always found my IBS was worse during a period and know many others who have said the same - have you tried an antispasmodic or something like Ibuprofen at these times - maybe speak to a Pharmacist? I am not sure that something cold like ice cream is helpful as when I have read articles on line about IBS, it has been commented that cold drinks, etc, can cause spasms in the digestive tract and I have found this myself. I would have thought a warm drink and hot water bottle where the stomach pain is might be helpful.

I dont have icecream anymore for that reason, it made it worse, I cant take ibuprofen as I'm asthmatic and I don't have access to anti spasmodic aids but will defo to talk to the pharmacist on mon then I've got a phone consult with dr on 1st March, will update if any progress, I'm in pain right now so I'm using a hot water bottle pressed against my side & its helping a lot, thank you for your response I will look into everything u mentioned xcx

Thank you for responding its really appreciated and helpful I ended up in hospital with the pains and couldn't urinate drs didn't know what to do and said it's not a urinary infection or something to do with my kidneys and was healthy enough to go home and that's all that was done yesterday, blooming jk that drs only checked for infection but thanks everyone all this helps a great deal. Xcx
