Does alcohol make you flare up?

LittleMissWorry1981 profile image

I went away with my hubby Saturday and came home Tuesday. We probably had a few too many glasses of wine as we were celebrating.

I woke on Tuesday morning and my stomach was so uncomfortable. I suffer badly with bloating anyway but this was, and still much worse. Its like I have a tight band around the top of my abdomen.

Does anyone else have this with alcohol?

Also, I get discomfort in my upper back, towards the left. Is this normal?

Thanks everyone

Have a look at the website lots of medical advice from IBS specialists theibsnetwork.org/the-self-...

Alcohol can irritate the gut and may cause diarrhoea. Drink no more than two units per day and have at least two days a week off.

Totally gave it up. The game just wasn't worth the candle. Feel much better now all around. No real nostalgia either - it simply isn't something that does anything for me anymore.

I used to get urgent diarrhea the morning after red wines but things have calmed lately after a year on low fodmap. Gp said if I think I am affected by anxiety then moderate wine intake may help. So I try to limit to 3 glasses and not too often, so far thats worked and anyway good for health overall. Gin seems to be ok but I'm not a big fan and cant take fizzy stuff like tonic. Sometimes deliberately defizz it.A friend reported his arthritis was bettrr after desisting from red wine and steak so it affects people in different ways

Yes, I tend to have a flare up after a glass of wine, particularly red. There might be another reason for the flare up - generally, I don’t tend to sleep as long after a glass of wine, and my night can be disturbed so I generally wake up tired - if that makes sense. It could be the fatigue that causes the flare up. I tend to drink just one or two glasses per week, but I know what some of you are saying and that is to cut it out altogether . Understood, but I have cut out gluten and lactose from my diet - I do feel much better for it, but I feel my diet is driving my lifestyle, and this just gives me a break (even though I know I shall probably regret it slightly in the morning)

After drinking any alcohol I get abdominal pain and back ache and the rush for the loo in the morning just recently had a scope the consultant advised against drinking any alcohol So I just have a few on a Saturday night if I’m not working now

Hi ,I’ve had to cut any alcohol down too , I used to have a few glasses of Prosecco at the weekend but now it’s just a small glass . If I’m having any problems that day or if I’m in a lot of pain then I don’t bother , I do miss it as I’ve cut out so much from my diet to try & ease symptoms , I refuse to cut it out completely !

I'm the same. I used to drink a lot and I was fine. However, we're all a little bit older. On top of that, anxiety can weaken the gut massively. Not to mention alcohol is, basically, poison! I had a fair bit a few weeks ago and the hangover lasted 6 days. I still have the odd beer with dinner when I'm out, and that seems to be fine. You just need to adjust as you get older. Or give it up. Gracefully 😊

Alcohol itself doesn't make a difference to me, but the type of drink does. For instance, I can't drink beer or cider without getting pain but I'm fine with wine.

LittleMissWorry1981, your flare may have been a result of diminished thiamine and magnesium caused by alcohol. Activated thiamine is critical for brain function and vagus nerve connection to the digestive system. There are anti thiamine factors that diminish thiamine to be aware of found in the stuttering link below. Adequate magnesium is needed for thiamine to become bio active yet alcohol as shown in the Krispin link causes loss of magnesium in addition to others. The B vitamins work better together and a fat soluble form such as TTFD offers high absorption levels. Research other effects of a thiamine deficiency. Always consult with your health care professional before using any supplement.

My partner used to suffer really badly ( only used to have a few drinks on a sat night) until his consultant advised him that a small amount of alcohol can cause inflammation in body for months, that was 3yrs ago & he hasnt had a drink since & his health has been so much better

Hi. I haven't drank alcohol for 14 years now due to it flaring my IBS & rushing to the loo for days after. Felt it just wasn't worth it. Missed it at first 🤗
