Hi all

I've completed my week of research for IBS. I wore a pulse and heart monitors for the week, filled in various surveys through the day using an app I had to download and also you have to fill in other bits and pieces, I won't go into too much information😉.

What I was surprised about were what you can suffer with with IBS, they are (there are the obvious ones of course):

1. Abdominal pain

2. Intestinal Gas

3. Rumbling Tummy

4. Bloated

5. Urge to open bowels

6. Feeling sick (this is one I had most days before I started the Low Fodmap diet)

7. Burping

8. Heartburn

9. Feeling full

10. Feeling an urgent need to open bowels

11. Straining when opening bowels

12. Bowels not completely empty

13. Palpitations

14. Sweating

15. Short of breath

16. Dizzy

17. Muscle pain

18. Hurting joints

19. Urge to urinate

20. Anxious

21. Feeling low

22. Irritated

23. Stressed

24. Worried

I hope this helps and if anyone else would like to take part, here is the relevant information:

Here's the paragraph that was in the IBS Network August edition:

Participants wanted for IBS research

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London are looking for people with IBS to take part in a new study, evaluating a new mobile application for symptom registration in IBS.

The study involves recording your symptoms on a mobile app and wearing a wristband device for seven days. All information will be anonymous and treated confidentially.

You may be eligible for this study if you suffer from IBS and if you are aged between 18 to 70 years old and have a Smartphone.

On completion of the study, you will be compensated £50 for your time. If you would like further information, please email Dr Rabia Lalani at r.lalani@qmul.ac.uk.

Have a good day all and stay safe and well.

Alicia 😊🌈👍

No one has been in touch or responded to my email 😢

in reply to Viklou

It will happen, she took a little while to respond to me. I've no doubt that because she's a doctor she's only got a certain amount of time to respond. I've sent her another email today saying that others are interested.

She will get back to you, don't worry.

Thanks for that Alicia, interesting list. I have them all at times but one missing in my opinion, chills, a relatively new one for me!

There are some missing for me like fatigue and night symptoms. I don't burp a lot and my bowels empty regularly plus I can fart with the best of em lol

I do get quite tired these days, often dropping off in the afternoon, but I put that down to my age! :)

I'm totally exhausted with it. Self isolating last week has helped but still exhausted and it hard work doing anything. I do have a good mind set and push through it. I have on several occasions had to call my boss and request a time out as can't function sometimes

I don't know how you do it, Viklou! You often don't eat very much due to symptoms, I know, but it must all contribute to the exhaustion. You are amazing. I don't know how you keep going!

I won't let it define me. It's just a functional disorder with no apparent cause

You're certainly one tough cookie, that's for sure.

in reply to Viklou

On another note Viklou I received a call from Rabia, the doctor carrying out the research today and she's going through the emails, I'm hoping you'll hear soon.

in reply to Maureen1958

It really is and doctors seem to just think tummy pain, constipation and diarrhoea but not much else. I've not had chills, not yet anyway.

Hi I've applied to the email address but am waiting to hear.

in reply to Lancslass66

Excellent and best of luck for getting on. She will reply but it won't be until this coming week sometime. I'll have a call with her on Tuesday so I'll mention it to her.

I bet this doctor has had hundreds apply and send emails

in reply to Viklou

She's had quite a few as I put up a post in a locked IBS Facebook group as well. She was amazed on how many. I'll be speaking to her on Tuesday.

it may help but the rolls on day and night

in reply to Neil119

I'm so sorry Neil to hear that. Have you tried the Low Fodmap diet, fortunately it's made a huge difference to me, I've gone from very loose stools and nausea every day to getting it very occasionally and now being able to exercise again.

I suffer with almost all of the symptoms you listed! I didn't realize it could all be to do with IBS. The bloating and palpitations are regular for me as well as the anxiety. I am glad you listed them it has made me feel better there are days I think I am dying

in reply to Scinder

Oh no, I'm so so sorry for you and there was ne thinking I was really bad with constant nausea and diarrhoea. Honestly though, the people that just say, oh, IBS, even worse the doctors that say 'oh, it's just IBS'. Thinking of you🤗
