Rectum Full Of Poop But No Urge To Go

Hi Guys,

I really thought I was getting somewhere with my problem, above, but have been really struggling the last few days. I'm waiting on getting a proctogram done but have no idea when. I have tried many ways to try and alleviate this issue but am in pain and uncomfortable with this. There is no pain when I do go but seem to feel full, in the rectum, most of the time and about an hour after going to the loo.

I have bought some magnesium citrate today and will try these but am ready to try anything at the moment, any ideas? TIA

Dev

You may have a prolapse which will show up on the proctogram. Pelvic floor exercises can help this but must be done correctly but it’s not a quick fix, it can take weeks to strengthen the muscles. Irrigation/enemas will clear out the bowels.

Thank you Swishy, Ive suspected something like this may be wrong. Frustrating as this did not show up on CT scan or colonoscopy. Do you have a link to the right pelvic exercises I should be doing. Thanks again regards Dev

I had the same issues and only the proctogram showed up the rectocele. Unfortunately there isn't a link for exercises but I've been told by my physio to do 3 x 10 quick squeezes (pull the rectum in) and 3 x 10 hold for 10 seconds, 3 times a day. You could also look at correct posture for opening your bowels which may help with the angle if you have a prolapse. I hope that helps!

Many thanks Swishy. That's great as it sounds like it has worked for you, well done. I'll certainly be doing this while I wait for the proctogram. Cheers Dev

It's still ongoing for me. Good luck!

Thank you and to you. How long have you been doing the exercises and have you tried anything else? Did you have the same symptoms as me? Thank you, Dev

I’ve been doing for about 10 weeks with some signs of improvement but getting knocked back too. Avoid lifting anything heavy or that causes your Ab muscles to strain as this will undo any good done with the exercises. It takes upto 8 weeks for muscles to co-operate and 16 weeks for laying down of muscle fibres. It could take 6 months though! If you go to the the gym avoid free weights, rowing machine, sit-ups, crunches, jumps! Pilates is good as is gentle beginner ab exercises. Best not to eat lots of white bread and white rice. I’ve cut out completely, prefer brown anyway. Hormones can play a part with reduction in muscle strength too especially in women of a certain age! Hope that all helps.

Oh and avoid straining on the loo! For the exercises I should have said squeeze (pulling anus in!) You can test you have the right muscles if you can stop your wee but only test this, don’t use this to do the exercises as it will cause damage.

Thank you so much for your time and information, at least I can get started with the exercises now in case the proctogram is a long time coming. I had started doing more exercises as in press ups, sit ups etc so had better put them on the back burner for now. I can do the exercise you mentioned ok so will concentrate on that. Thanks again, Dev

Hi Swishy, How's things going with you? Are you taking any meds of laxatives to help your situation. I seem to be getting a bit more urge to go in the morning but if I go 3 times in a day the last one is a struggle. I'm taking a bit of movicol a day and trying to find a balance between to much Movicol or being too hard. Hope you are starting to see and feel a difference. Are there any other exercises you do?

Thanks again for your time

Regards

Dev

Hi Dev glad to hear you’re making some progress. I haven’t found that laxatives make any difference to me so I gave up on them. I have a good diet in any case so consistency is not an issue. I think my hormones are causing my problems to be worse. The joys of being a woman lol! There is only that one exercise for pelvic floor strengthening sadly but keep at it. I put some music on to listen to at the same time so it’s less boring! All the best.

Hi Swishy, How's things going? I spoke too soon thinking things were getting better, I see what you mean about it could take a long time. Hope you are starting to see the benefits now and feeling better. I'm struggling at the moment with going once or twice in the morning but filling up over the afternoon and not being able to go go till next morning.

Take Care

Regards

Dev

Magnesium Oxide is likely to be more potent than magnesium citrate since Oxide has a lower level of absorbability than Citrate so more of it ends up in the bowels to draw in water and produce a BM.

Good luck with your further tests.

I used to take these for a regular bowel movement when having to be low fibre:

myvitamins.com/vitamins/mag...

I used to start around 800mg at bed time on an empty stomach, then increment by 100mg (1 pill) each night until I got a response the next morning or the morning after.

This worked well when I was low fibre, but when I started to introduce fibre it became more unpredictable (either not working well enough or too well), so I had to give it up.
