Smelly Gas & Loose Stools

I have had a QFit test and a huge amount of blood tests of late. Last year I had a ct and mri and xrays. I have had abdomen issues for years and spent a small fortune on private tests. Had an endoscopy and colonoscopy 18 months back. I tried to start eating more fibre, at start this was OK, but I have been having harvest oaks at night and in the morning as well as blueberries, all of a sudden lots of smelly wind, loose stools, more pain. I also love steak but last night I had some and today I get pain, smelly wind and very loose stools. I also have a cold and have taken sudafed max, could this give me diarrhoea..

Your thoughts to all of my issues

Hi Axial, I find some foods do just cause me to have more gas but since I started eating more slowly, really chewing my food has helped. I'm gradually adding in more and more fibre every day but worried about overdoing it. I also think whenever I'm run down with a cold my whole digestive system is upset and I can go from loose stools to constipation 😔

I only have small amounts of red meat now and so far it's been ok but the biggest difference for me has been eating at the table and taking my time 🙂

Yes, it could. Lots of things can cause stomach pain and wind. I have had IBS for many years. I found hypnosis was helpful for a while. I can't tolerate fibre, only the soluble type in a low Fodmaps diet. I also have intolerances. Perhaps you hsve them too. I have found over the years that if I get other health problems it makes the IBS worse. At present I have an allergy problem and I am down to just eating farleys rusks, chicken, baby carrots, basmati rice and tinned tomatoes. It's a very limited diet but at least now the pain has gone and I am not constipated.

Have you lost weight with the diet

I had a stable weight on the Fodmaps diet until I went on steroids and Gabapentin. Gabapentin has made me gain 3 stone!

As well as IBS and only being able to eat 8 different bland foods, I have an over active immune system and suffer neuropathic skin pain all over my body which without the Gabapentin is agonising (feels like every bit of my skin, eyelids, nostrils, lips, mouth and other places you dont want to think about is encased in prickles, needles, thorns, pins. All pushing into my skin) it's a horrid condition which also causes itchy rashes and hyoersensitivity. I'm gaining weight steadily but i cant even consider stopping the Gabapentin. I'm caught between axrock and a hard place!

Have you been referred to a fodmap trained dieitian to take you through the fodmap elimination and reintroduction diet to see if you have any fodmap intolerances? Red meat can be very hard to digest and can definitely cause smelly wind. One of the possible side effects of Sudafed is diarrhea. There's lots of advice here about IBS in general, depending on what your overarching symptoms are:

??

Hi Axial , I agree with Grateful71 in that chew your food more slowly as that does help as you are taking in much less air hence lessening the amount of wind.

I had food poisoning back in November 2018 and was ill for just over a year i.e. post infectious IBS, I'd had IBS C for a very long time from 1996 but the food poisoning tipped me over the edge and I ended up with IBS D and lots of nausea.

I became a Vegan for my health and just before I contracted the food poisoning I was a lot better but then of course after the bout of food poisoning I became quite ill. I had all manner of tests i.e. Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, Ultrasound x 2 and a myriad of blood tests.

To cut a long story short I'm now following the low fodmap diet, best thing I ever did, I feel back to normal, can't believe the different it's made. I'm under a Dietician through the NHS (I live in the UK) and I go back at the end of this month to start to look at reintroducing food. I cannot believe how much better I feel.

Therefore, have your thought about looking closely at the food you eat and seeing if there are triggers? Just a thought as this is what it was for me.

I hope you get better very soon.

Take care

:)
