So I recently took the IBS test from IbsSmart and my vinculin was elevated (which means I probably have post-infectious IBS). I could have saved thousands of dollars in testing for rare diseases if I took this sooner. Nonetheless, I still don't know best way to treat this and I am discouraged that this could last upto 6 years (or never resolve). Any suggestions on treatment for POST INFECT. IBS would be appreciated, thanks!

it's about $220 and website is ibssmart.com

I live in the UK and I'm so sorry you have spent a lot of money on other tests.

I've had IBS since 1996 and initially I was in a lot of pain and had constipation but now I look back at that and I'd rather have the pain than what I've had since last November. I had food poisoning on 22 November (I'm still getting some issues now) and had acute nausea and diarrhoea, it was the nausea that I found debilitating.

Fortunately in this country we have the NHS and I have to say what an excellent service it is but of course they do tend to stick to the medical side of things rather than alternatives although they do have Dieticians that follow the Low Fodmap diet and I'm hoping to be referred to a Dietician. Therefore, through the NHS I had a Colonoscopy, Ultrasound and Endoscopy and all came back clear which didn't surprise me, I also had a myriad of blood tests which also came back clear.

I was getting totally fed up as I wasn't feeling better so I decided to see a Nutritionist and she said I had a high sensitivity to Gluten (I had suspected this for quite a while), Formalin (a kind of preservative), Rye, Barley, Oats and milk (I don't have milk as I'm a Vegan) and I have a medium sensitivity to peas. I know this is correct as I had some normal gluten, by normal I mean not fermented (I have been tolerating fermented sourdough bread) and I reacted to that wheat and my symptoms returned for about 2 to 2 1/2 weeks. Regarding the peas, I had a Vegan Magnum in August and was poorly that night and the following morning and wondered what I'd eaten but then remembered the Magnum and looked on the ingredients and pea protein was one of them.

I have also paid for a Gut Biome Test which was very interesting and it goes to show that how Gut Biome is definitely a factor in illnesses and diseases. I'm still trying to follow the recommendations but am getting there.

As far as I'm concerned IBS is down to diet and after getting food poising in November last year I know how you feel. Since implementing part of what the Nutritionist recommended i.e. I'm eating sourdough but not any other gluten and not eating any of the other things I've listed above.

I would have a good look at the Low Fodmap diet as that is the way to go, diet is key.

The very best of luck.

Hi, my understanding is test is mainly there to identify root cause of symptoms and save money and risk of more invasive tests rather than to offer bespoke solutions. It was developed by dr pimental and team at cedars sinai and they claim some bespoke treatments are in development for release in next couple of years so keep an eye out on their web page and twitter feeds. Otherwise i think it is trial and error with treatments and diet. Also look into a 2 week course of rifaximin.
