Intermittent Fasting/Sourdough Bread etc

Hi All

I've seen a few posts on HU regarding intermittent fasting and have been thinking of it for a while now. So today, after reading an article in my Simply You magazine, which is the September issue, and after seeing a few posts on HU about fasting I decided to have a go at Intermittent Fasting and am fasting for 16 hours and then I eat in an 8 hour window.

I had food poisoning back in November 2018 and got so fed up with the symptoms I was experiencing for about 10 and a half months I decided to go and see a Nutritionist and she said I had a high sensitivity to gluten, rye, barley, milk and Formalin (Formalin definition is - a clear aqueous solution of formaldehyde and methanol used especially as a preservative) and a medium sensitivity to peas. I had a Vegan Magnum in August and that very same day I was poorly in the evening and noticed on the wrapper than it had pea protein in it so that's a no no for me. Other than that I was still experiencing problems so started to doubt the Nutritionist, particularly as I was able to eat sourdough bread with no issues, how wrong I was do doubt.

I went to the cinema last week and then had a lovely meal in Bella Italia but stupidly had some spaghetti as I'd been eating sourdough bread and thought I'd be okay. Unfortunately the following day I didn't feel brilliant and have been up and down ever since so now know for sure that I have a problem with some gluten. The IBS Network to which I am a member of published a Spelt Flour sourdough bread recipe and said that those with IBS may be able to tolerate it (this is why I started eating sourdough again and was pleased I was okay). The problem with normal wheat is that it contains a lot of fructans whereas Spelt Sourdough contains very little.

Therefore, one of the reasons to try intermittent fasting is to try and get my tummy back on track as I was feeling really well and back to normal until last week. I won't be eating wheat again that's for sure.

I'm sorry for the issues. I hope things work out for you.

I have a question. How did the nutritionist learn that those food items were a no go for you? I'm about to go see an allergist or a nutritionist and haven't decided which yet.

Thanks

Thank you and I am feeling so much better today, so much so I've been out for a powerwalk.😀

I was sceptical with the Nutritionist and probably wouldn't have seen one if it hadn't been for a friend recommending her. I held a magnetic bar and whilst holding it she put a kind of little plug into the machine. She had 56 plugs each one testing you for a different food.

When she said I had a high intollerances to gluten, barley and rye I wasn't at all surprised as I had my suspicions about gluten after researching on the internet. I was surprised I had a medium sensitivity to peas but I used to eat them 5 to 6 times a week. I had a Vegan Magnum in August and was poorly that night, the only different thing I ate was the Magnum so I looked at the ingredients and they contained pea protein.

I can eat sourdough bread and the reason I tried it was because the IBS Network said that Spelt Sourdough has a lot less fructans. I'm going to make the sourdough but fortunately what I've bought I haven't reacted to.

Look up Nutritionists in your area and read people's comments to gauge how good they are.

Very best to you.😀

Hello crazy fitness

Hope today finds you well.

I have been an intermittent faster for many many years.

16:8 mixed in with OMAD once/twice per week.

I have suffered virtually all my life with gastrointestinal/bowel disorders/intolerances IBS on crack as I describe it, plus suffered peritonitis & abdominal sepsis 2014 which left me with adhesions & other problems.

Being an intermittent faster, plus I eat totally 90-95% clean, no processed foods, no deep fried foods, no caffeine, no alcohol, no carbonated drinks, no dairy, gluten, wheat’ rye, barley helps alleviate problems I don’t need constant bloating, stomach discomfort + other symptoms & also has assisted in not having to worry about unwanted body fat/weight gain which is associated with my other health diseases/disorders & their medications.

I am from a health & fitness professional background over 25 years so intermittent fasting came very naturally to me many years ago, plus it was my only solution to having as little as possible problems with gastrointestinal health.👍🏼

I also do not eat any rice or potatoes.

Hi crazyfitness, I do the intermittent fasting now. It's not something I intended doing, it just sort of happened as time went along. Firstly, I cut out breakfast and gradually pushed lunch back to later and later so that now I don't generally eat till about 4pm or later and my evening meal would be somewhere about 9pm but can be as late as 11pm or later. It seems to be helping, in a fashion. Somedays, I only have the evening meal, but the jury is out on that at the moment. Maureen.

It just sort of happened with me and I do feel better as I tend to eat lighter. I'll just see how it goes.😀

Hi,

We recommend that any exclusion diet is only done under the supervision of a registered dietitian. For more information on diet and IBS visit our website here theibsnetwork.org/diet/

Thank you. I will have a look and I am a member so should look more often.

I saw my doctor but he wouldn't refer me to a Dietician. I've had a Gut Biome test and they've been very helpful.
