Severe flare up - 9th day

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help

I have recently been diagnosed with IBS-D and currently on the 9th day of a flare up. I had a rather spicy curry which has triggered this (though I’m usually fine with spicy food). I have severe diarrhoea and cramps. I have been sticking to low FODMAP foods and even went 36hours with no food at all. Still no improvement. I am taking;

- Silicolgel, which has eased some of the pain and allowed me to eat

- peppermint oil capsules

- buscopan

- Colofac

And now I’ve had to take Imodium, which I didn’t want to do as it makes the cramps worse. I have also have blood in my stools (if you can call them that, as they are completely liquid) though this isn’t bright red.

I also have an 8 month old baby who I am still breast feeding. I am at a loss as to what to do. There are no doctor appointments so I saw a nurse and I have completed a sample, which I am waiting for the results for.

I am desperate to know that someone else out there has been in a similar situation and if they have, what helped them improve and how long did it take? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

How ridiculous and shocking that you can't get a GP appointment in these circumstances. It is not appropriate for you to take advice from a website after nine days of diarrhoea. I suggest you call your Practice this morning if they are open. If not, call 111 and see if they can get you an emergency appointment with a GP today.

I agree with whitesugar particularly as there is blood in your stool. I have used 111 before and they are great and I got an appointment the same day at my local urgent care clinic and saw a doctor.

Hi. I feel your anxiety. I do think that you must see your doctor for advice. You need to get this sorted and they will listen sympathetcally. Perhaps a referral to a gastroenterologist would get you some very useful help. Good luck.

How awful for you - I’m so sorry 😕. Are you in the UK and can you phone 111? I’m more concerned you have food poisoning actually - I don’t think this is your IBS. Please get some help xxxx

Immodium became like candy to me. Did not help. I take cholestyramine powder aka questran daily for 7 yrs now and lomotil when needed. I sympathize with you esp having a little one. These both help and never constipated. The bright red blood could-be internal hemorrhoids. But You need to see your doc asap though!

Hi everyone thank you so much for your messages. The Imodium has helped a little and I have managed to eat. But first thing Tuesday I will try my doc again, unless things worsen again and I will call 111. I’m just at that point where it’s comforting to know I’m not the only one to have experienced this

I have had IBS most of my life recently I have had some really bad flare ups with IBS D I found a new substance to take that has been helping it is called Kratom. It is from a tree grown in Asia so it a all natural from the leaves. I take one in the morning and one capsule in the evening before bed and I am so much better. Plus I don’t have the depression that comes with IBS or the anxiety of the bathroom issue etc. cramping is almost gone and less farting bloating etc. I am happy now! Telling all my friends!
