Citalopram 10mg for ibs pain

I used to take citalopram for anxiety 2 years and stopped taking it for a while. Gone back to the docs they prescribed me with citalopram 10mg again as they said this will help with ibs. I've only been taking it for 4 days now. Has anyone been prescribed antipressant not just for anxiety but also for ibs pain? How long does it take to work? Has it worked for anybody?

Thankyou

A

Hi, I’m currently on citalopram for anxiety and ibs, it took a while to work and the 1st month was bad but I persevered and at the moment I am lots better. Yeah I occasionally have a ibs flare up but not as many as I used to. Think my anxiety causes my ibs so the citalopram eases my anxiety so that helps with the ibs. Hopefully will work for you too.

I was on citalopram for depression for years. I never heard of it being used for ibs pain before!! I’ve been off citalopram for nearly a year now & I can’t say that my Ibs is any worse than before! Having said that I don’t get much pain with my Ibs thankfully and never have. Anything is worth a go I’d say!! Different things work for different people. Good luck with it!!

Hi Ashley

I take amitriptyline 30mg in the evening, initially for chronic pain, but my GP told me it will help with IBS and the insomnia I have. I still have to follow The FODMAP diet but I think it is helping - especially sleep - which also means I can deal with my day better. IBS was making my life miserable so I feel I’m in balance now; pain relief ✅ sleep ✅ and calmer tummy ✅ when I have an episode I take mebeverine - hope you feel like you are in control soon.

I have suffered with IBS-d for twenty years and last year I was prescribed citalopram 20mg and it's eased my pain and symptoms, I have no more bloating and and less toilet visits. Just tolerate the side affects which usually ease after 4 week and I'm sure it will help loads.

Hi there I was given citalopram but found it made me worse, it does help some though, I was then put on loperamide which helped a little, depending on how bad your ibs is I would recommend seeing a gastrologist though as it turned out I didn’t have ibs but a blockage which after a few laxatives clearing my system solved my problem, I had been wrongly diagnosed for 2 years and it turned out the tablets were making me worse because my issue was that I was going often because there was no room in my body
