Functional Diarrhoea

Anyone here ever heard of (or experienced) Functional Diarrhoea! I have it myself. It has been recognised by the Rome IV Criteria as a FGD (Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder) like IBS. In fat it is considered to be a subtype of IBS-D (diarrhoea predominant irritable bowel syndrome) and has virtually all the symptoms of IBS-D except for he abdominal pain. I am not too clear on the mechanics of this form of FGD but that has been my latest diagnosis.

If anyone else here has that, or experienced similar symptoms, I would love to hear from you. The diarrhoea as in IBS-D can be urgent and yes, I have experienced more than my fair share of humiliating and embarrassing violent urgent public diarrhoea accidents (mostly from the inability to find a loo or cottage in time).

Thanks.

Think you have to manage it as IBSD, by making diet changes. Perhaps slowly increasing more fibre. I believe your diagnosis simply means that no underlying cause could be established. You will have to start with a food diary and try and find any triggers etc, etc.

I suggest you look at this website bad-uk.org/ and see if you recognise the symptoms of Bile Acid Diarrhoea in yourself. My memories of the last 40 years are all coloured by horrible incidents of unpredictable diarrhoea. It has all stopped since I started taking medication for this under recognised condition.

Whitesugar: Just out of curiosity...what drug are you taking for this? I take Colestipol...works wonders!

I take Questran. I believe some areas will only allow prescription of the more expensive drugs if recommended by a consultant.

Yes..Questran is a bile acid sequestrant drug, also....like Welchol and Colestipol. I don't understand why more doctors do not know about these or do not prescribe them. Boggles my mind, actually!

Hi!

The most researched FGD is IBS -symptoms vary from person to person. Agree with Fuv38

I had chronic diarrhea for years and years...nothing would stop it...then I researched bile acid sequestrants and discovered two drugs that work wonders: Welchol and Colestipol. Both stop diarrhea in it's filthy little tracks. I, too, had many, many accidents and cleaned up many, many messes...not now! These 2 drugs are also used for Type II diabetes and to help lower cholesterol (but only if taken with a statin). Ask your doctor about these!
