IBS and Nausea

Hi!

I go through phases of being nauseous after I eat for a few days- a week, accompanied by excess gas, and constipation alternating w diarrhea (sorry tmi)

How do you guys control the nausea associated with IBS? It’s interfering with work and it makes me anxious to eat! Do you take prescription medicine or change your diet? What foods do you avoid during a flare up?

Thanks 😊

Hello,

I’m still trying to sort out my issues of diarrhoea and bloating too but I managed to stop the nausea. This might not be the same for you so I’m sorry if I give the wrong advice! I found that cutting out caffeine stopped my nausea. I really love coffee so tend to have one every now and then but if I get carried away and have too many over an extended period of time the nausea comes back. So I know it’s definitely down to that! Before I discovered this I was just taking Peptobismol and found that really helpful and stopped nausea for a bit too.

I hope you manage to find a way that works for you soon 😊

I cut out all caffeine long ago, I miss it so much 😭 Coffee especially really used to cause me too much stomach pain and nausea. Thank you for your feedback 😊

Hello Birdlover,

The nausea is the worst. I found that any kind of prescription medicine made my nausea so much worse. Eating the right food was much better. It will take a while until the nausea will go away but it will. Best to stay away from grains in particular whole grain ... that’s what made me feel the most ill..... the opposite what we’ve been told for decades (we were given wrong advice). Also sugar is a bad idea ... I know giving up sugar is not easy.

I agree, watching what you eat is definitely a good way to treat it. I’ve found that when my IBS flares up that dairy, gluten and anything high in fat makes it worse! I’ll have to monitor my sugar too and see how that influences my IBS. Thank you!

hey birdlover!

I get nausea too when I flare up and it's the worst.

Basically when I have too many flares in a short span of time, I do a week of low FODMAP and it balances out...

I find that lemon juice in water in the morning sorts me out in the short term.

I hope this helps!

I’m a big fan of lemon water, totally works! I’ll have to research the low FODMAP diet and see how it goes. Thanks 😊

I hope you can get it otc.

I take a half or less tab and it always works.

It might need a scrip.

The one I take is called Domerid on pres cription.

Not reccomended if you have cardiac issues.

Hope that helps.

Try taking antacids like Rennies, sometimes I go through periods where my stomach acid acts up and I get gastritis. This can make u feel nauseous after every meal because of the excess acid your stomach produces. I’m going through a flare up of it right now, I don’t know how I would do it without antacids. I hope this is the same for you because it’s an easy fix :) let me know if they work!

I’ve recently looked into gastritis and wondered if I had that!! I can’t take tums because they make my IBS worse but I’ll look into other anti acids, thanks 😊

Hi birdlover

I'm also suffering with nausea at present, I hate it especially as I also have Emetophobia (I'm having CBT for this). I think mine us down to a pot if BOL lunch pot that I had on Thursday as I was fine before that. In the short term I have been using Stugeron travel sick tablets and they work for me for nausea.

I will be going on the low FODMAP diet though as that's the only way is to sort out diet.

All the very best

Have you tried ginger tea? It helps me with nausea and indigestion. I buy it in the health food store. I don't like the taste of it by itself, so I put a black or green tea bag in along with it. I've read that green tea is healthier. I also find mint tea helpful.

I'm a tea lover. I just started drinking chamomile to calm my anxiety. It's helping.

Caffeine can be a big problem and I love itrand continue to drink coffee. I have found generic Prilosec to be helpful. I take 40 mg daily If I have a really bad flare up I take Zofran it is an Rx.

I used to take Prilosec maybe I can start that up again, hadn’t considered it. Thanks 😊

I would suggest the 40 mg Rx dose or else two over the counter and give it a bit of time. Good luck.

Sorry you suffer from nausea, it's awful,I would rather have a pain than nausea. I suffer terribly with it when I have a flare, the last one I had was in June and the nausea was so bad I couldn't eat. I lost 10lbs in weight. Eventually my gastro prescribed ondansetron which is a strong anti- nausea drug, he advised using it sparingly. Ginger tea helps a little, and as someone else suggested, sturgeon. I do hope you can get rid of it.

I’ve lost weight from it too, it’s crazy. Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll look into that medication
