I have not been diagnosed by a Doctor with I.B.S. but she called the other week and saw Buscopan on the table, she said they were fine. I am on so many various medications for other things ie Muscular/Skeletral severe pain, that I was put on Amiprazole to line my tummy but it does not seem to have much affect these days so the dose was doubled but still in agony with I.B.S. when hungry, first thing in the morning and it awakens me in the night so that I have to take 4 Buscopan a day, I try not to go over this. Tried Colpermin pepperment oil tablets but they seem to give me the runs. I am either very constipated or loose occasionally. Have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes and liver enzymes raised so now on a diet to add insult to injury and spend half the day in bed and have become reclusive after working for 46 years in a very interesting position, well at 77 and no family can be expected I suppose!! - the Estate where I live has been nicknamed God's Waiting Room as all very elderly haha - got to laugh or I would cry.....I just say to myself well you are not suffering alone Grumpy, millions worse than you.. PS Just wondering if green tea is making my IBS worse, but have lost a stone in weight with it.

You should see a gastroenterologist, if you have not already done so.

I really do think you need insist to your doctor that you want / need to be referred to a gastroenterologist and have blood tests etc and a thorough check up, especially if you are losing weight.

At 77 you’re still good for a lot of years yet😉

You are so kind to say I have a lot of years, hardly think so as my GP came out last week and apparently having been on painkillers for so long and more so taking anti-inflams for many years they have burned the lining of my osofigas and stomache so that is making the acid reflux even worse, so he has taken me off the inflams and will revaluate me in six weeks, a real nice caring guy who is really interested in over 65s unlike a lot of Doctors and partly retired himself, I should have gone over to that Practice many years ago and not stayed with the other useless one for 50 years, my nausea is getting a little better so it must be the inflams which were making me even worse. I have received so many supportive mails from this caring Forum but not been well enough to reply until now, but will answer you all in good time. God Bless you all and make you better, En - GRUMBLE GRUMBLE.

you mentioned that you are on other medications for other health issues ..could your symptoms be a side effect of these drugs ? many people start having stomach / gut issues after being on specific drug/s for a long time ..so may be you need to review your current medications and make sure they are not the triggers to your IBS .

Thank you so much for your response and advice and do forgive me for not writing sooner but not been at all well. Yes you are correct in your conclusion, my Doc came out to see me late Thursday and stopped for an hour explaining stuff, have been on inflams for many years as on Painkillers since 87 and its the inflams which have burned the lining of my osofigas and stomache and I am hoping and praying its not turned to cancer, being revaluated in a few weeks and at the moment taking all the healing foods I can. So glad I changed my Practice as a real caring lot of Doctors, the other Practice which I was with for 50 years could not care less GRUMBLE GRUMBLE haha.

Hi again ! No worries ..we all have our stressful times and struggles in here 🤗 i'm just Glad that you managed to pinpoint the triggers to your gut issues which were actually your Anti inflammatory drugs !!

Such a relief to know that you're in the correct path of healing with a new , more caring practice 👍

Hope your healing progress goes well and that you feel much better .. wishing you the best of luck 🌹

Hi Grumble - I'm 71 and only this year I have helped my problem by having an allergy food intolerance test which can be done in the Alphega group of chemists in most areas up and down the country. As I am diabetic too, I share similar problems to yourself.

From the allergy test I found I had multi grain, part dairy, egg, maize , rice barley, wheat, rye, malt. I am able to eat oats and do not have a gluten allergy so I rely on oat cakes which have no added flour rice flour, ordinary milk. As milk contains sugar, I drink lactase free milk being diabetic. Since removing every food which showed up on the test whether it be severe or mild, I no longer have the problem of having to find a loo on long journeys.

As many people find tress a trigger to IBS, you can't specify a cure, as the gut is involuntary muscle, and is not in conscious control. If you have diarrhoea and spasmodic intestinal problems, I would go for the tests. I have also found flavoured fibre gel orange or lemon when drunk in the morning or evening absorbs the fluid in the intestine, so you don't have a problem. However as you are older your doctor might recommend another product which is gentle but has the same effect of solidifying matter and making things easier. Over the counter remedies such as buscapan might relieve symptoms but may not tackle the reason why your gut is reacting to certain foods.

I also have removed tea from my diet, as ordinary tea contains tannins, and sometimes fluoride. The tannins are from processing the tea by roasting the leaves, like smoking a cigarette. Smoked and spicy food might be avoided. Tannins are found in coffee and chocolate so I occasionally have a cup of hot chocolate with lactase free milk. I can eat hard cheese as I am not allergic to casein protein, - this contains a few grams of lactin.

I cannot eat cottage cheese yoghurt, ordinary milk, camembert, brie . I can eat fish meat

and vegetables - and can eat potato crisps as a snack but everything else is excluded.

I found another product which helped a bit from GP - Colofac - merbeverine which targets the gut muscle only. It has no side effects mentioned. Everyone is different - but if you are losing weight dramatically then advice to have ultrasound tests or other tests as soon as you can is sensible.

Thank you so much for your interesting reply, sorry I am late responding but have been pretty rough. My Doctor has taken me off anti-inflams and I am feeling a little better as apparently the osofigas and lining of my stomach have been burned by taking these for many years and my last Doctor never ever warned me. I am presently taking healing foods and soothing teas without tannins and hopefully I will soon feel better, I was very interested to read your info re being checked for various food. Thanks again for your kindness.
