Ibs d-isaster

Hi everyone - first hospital ibs related encounter for me and its really hit home how serious and debilitating this can be!! I ended up in a&e yesterday due to my Ibs-c. Funny enough my Ibs all started with IBS-d to the point that i had an ‘accident’ when i couldnt get to the toilet on time!! That was in 2016! Since then ive had several D moments where ive had to dash to the loo. I started a food diary, changed my diet and had it under control - or so i thought! On Friday morning i was bent over the bed with stabbing pains that felt like a knife being stuck right up my anus and into my lower abdomen! Couldnt walk, couldnt think just felt pain like i never imagined possible!! Called into work told them i was going to my GP. Useless Gp told me it was pain due to spasms from my IBS and to take ibuprofen. So by yesterday id had enough- i looked 6 months pregnant and was starting to think all sorts so my mum drove me down to a&e. My X-ray showed that my bowel was enlarged and my whole middle area clogged up with poo!!! Consultant said it was bad to the point that if i dont get it cleared out my bowel could burst!!! I couldnt believe constipation could make you experience the pain i felt. I had been to the toilet aswell the day before but lets face it this past while i only go to the toilet maybe twice or three times a week if im lucky and for me i thought that was normal enough! But im all clogged up. An Anal examination was done aswell and all ok - no lumps or bumps thank fook!! He gave me laxido and told me to take 8 sachets which i did and tbh im not going as much as i thought i would today - its quite sporratic and totally water so im not quite sure how much im getting out of me! I took 8 more sachets today so hopefully tomorrow il have the same as today. The pain has subsided in my tummy by about 50% so at least thats something as all weekend i could barely walk! The consultant said if it doesnt clear me out i have to go back down and will need an enema!! Really dont want that. Im just wondering has anyone else used laxido for this reason and was it like this - in my mind i thought id be on the loo for hours but it comes and goes in small bouts. Have missed three days off my work so far and really fed up! What can i take so i go everyday and this doesnt happen again as i really dont think it would be healthy to relay on laxatives for the rest of my days!!! Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Sorry to hear you have had such a bad time. As a registered nutritional therapist I recommend my clients to have several tests. An under active thyroid can cause constipation, get a full thyroid test done. If it comes back as normal you may wish to look at your conversion of T4 to T3 hormones (both thyroid) as this can also cause constipation. A sluggish gallbladder can also cause constipation, or if you don’t have a gallbladder at all, so you would need to take bile salts. Digestive enzymes, magnesium citrate, Optibac bifido (probiotic), 2-4 kiwi fruit a day helps alleviate constipation, increase fibre, and low female hormones also cause constipation! Is it worse around a certain time of your menstural cycle?

Finding and addressing the root cause is the best way forward, that way you are not just treating the symptom - constipation.

You could also take this product to help but if you are on any medication, you should check that there are no contraindications with any supplements you take!

lifestyle-labs.com/products...

I hope this information helps. Good luck!

in reply to Helenbperks

Thank you so much for your detailed reply - so i got my thyroid tested previously and all was ok, i have heard people talking about magnesium citrate before so i will try it and i have already ordered a probiotic i was recommended yesterday to begin taking. Kiwi, im not a big fan of, but i will try anything at this stage. Hormones have all been checked and are fine. Xx

I started with ibs 2 years ago Have suffered with constipation all my life I now take bimuno and find I go most days also tried apple cider vinegar with the mother which also works.Have done all the diet change Every day a challenge Good luck

in reply to may61

Thank you - it certainly is a challenge. Its reassuring to know there are people going through the same things, sometimes i feel so alone as none of my family experience it however they do know and understand how much grief it gives me. Hate being off work with it as its the first time in the past three years ive ever had to actually take time off to sort it. Apple cider seems to be the big thing right now - what way do you take it? Thanks for the help.

Take it with water drink thru a straw before meals Start on 1/2 a teaspoon to start and after a few days I found a teaspoonful was enough for me Everyone is different so just trying to find out right amount Great for digestion

I feel for you, I know how awful ibs-c is. However I don't know why your doctor told you your bowel could 'burst', this sounds like rubbish to me as I've experienced much worse constipation than you describe and have never even heard of this as a possibility. So don't worry too much on that score. Have you tried prucalopride? The side effects can be a bit yucky but it's the only laxative that ever gave me a 'normal' bowel movement.

in reply to claire_louise

Apologies, its the way i worded it, he meant as in it can happen if you dont treat it, he said i was a long way off that happening but basically just highlighting the seriousness of it as i was kinda mortified when he showed me the x-ray jammed with poop. Today the laxigo is working far better than yesterday i actually feel like im clearing out so far this morning. Thanks for the advice.

claire_louise in reply to

Don't be embarrassed, it's not your fault your body won't cooperate! I would also recommend food intolerance and stools tests, as they can help you get to the root of the problem, and colonic hydrotherapy to treat it (much more effective and less damaging than laxatives, but make sure you find someone who is ARCH registered). Good luck! xx

in reply to claire_louise

Thank you. Do you do the colonic hydrotherapy.. how was it and how often do you get the treatment performed? I was so scared i would have to go back in to get an enema - i think its more the thought of it than anything else but you know what it might actually be a good idea for me!! I was going to do a food intolerance test this week actually but someone told me that it wasnt very reliable so i was sort of put off. Was yours accurate?

Can anyone recommend a good site to order the magnesium citrate from please? Thank you

Rhubarb and beetroot are good for constipation, and they're low-FODMAP. If all else fails I take macrogol, but it's not a quick fix, it can take two days to get things moving.

in reply to keithfre

Thank you

keithfre profile image

Peaches, dates and dried fruit are great nutritionally but unfortunately high-FODMAP!

in reply to keithfre

Some things that are high fodmap are ok for me ... and vice versa.... so i use a food diary and track foods that way as bread and milk etc is fine for me my biggest issue is fruit

Well i was collapsing in horrendous pain for EIGHT months! I had loads of enemas.my poo was like concrete! Finally i went on holiday& 24 hours later my appendix burst! Apparently there was an absess growing to months& blocking the bowel movements! In all the scans I had they never picked up on it.nearly killed me.i was so full of poison I lost my bladder& My bowels are all over the place now. Don't think for one minute you gacmbe this but I certainly d the enamas.just to be safe.

in reply to missymo

Sorry to hear that, i will, i know how serious it is now!! This scare is all i ever want. Thanks.

Missimo has given sound advice. If the doctors have recommended an enema, get it done ASAP. It's not as horrendous a procedure as it used to be and will clear the blockage far more quickly than anything else.

in reply to DTH123

Hi there, thanks, the Dr only recommended it if the laxido didnt work but thankfully between last night and this morning it has worked well.

These things really are serious. I also was in terrible pain a year ago. At first I thought it was gas, but kept getting worse. After 3 days I couldn't move or even walk because of the pain. It turned out to be a total small intestinal blockage caused by scar tissue. I had major surgery, was in the hospital for 12 days. I'm OK now. Anyone who is in a lot of intestinal pain should get it checked out.

in reply to b1b1b1

Defo agree, that sounds so scary!! Its no fun!! 😩😩

the question is how did you switch from ibs /Diahrrea to ibs / constipation ??

was it just spontaneously ? or have you been taking special meds for diahrrea that caused constipation as a side effect ?? in this case these anti diahrrea drugs should be stopped or dosage modified to regulate your BMs ..

in reply to Eternity78

No i dont take any meds i changed my diet over a period of time by eliminating foods that caused my ibs-d. Its not uncommon for IBS sufferers to go from d to c or vice versa.

HI CaraD. Firstly really sorry that you're going through this. It's so draining on anyone having to deal with gut issues.

Right my two cents, coming from a very similar place to being nearly rid of it.

Might come across a little strong but may be what you need right now.

Invest in some Apple Cider Vinegar. Artichoke Extract (capsules) & Good quality Probiotics.

Day 1 :

Take a artichoke extract.

Try not to eat heavily. (take a shot of apple cider vinegar in morning and night)

Day 2

Have a bone brooth for the day, CLEAN THAT GUT :)

Day 3

eat brown rice and chicken. Can have a little sauce but dont over do it.

Brown rice and chicken. like breast meat can be a life saver. if you have something important coming up eat it, lightly the day before.

after day 3,

I would continue to eat chicken and brown rice for a few more days to stable your stomach. trust me, i know its long, but worth it.

You can then slowly re introduce other foods.

I hope you find relief. My heart goes out to you. xx

I FEEL UR PAIN!!!

I have ibs c and the pain is horrific, ended up in hospital 3 times same as u literally bent over the pain was like nothing else ive ever experienced.

I now keep on top of it, i eat all healthy poop inducing foods 😂, i take a probiotic twice a day and digestive enzymes to keep the gut flora healthy.

Also peppermint capsules.

I take a dose of lactulose before bed so by time i get up i wana GO!

I cannot tell u how important water and drinking is as it works its way to ur bowel to water down ur poop if u dont drink enough it does not get enough to move and impacts which is what u prob had ie the your burst as it was stuck.

It a horrible thing... my whole life revolves around my bowels and making sure i go to toilet.

Also any painkillers and anti imflam( ibup, naproxen) clog u up so try not to have as many of them if u take them, try to stick to paracetamol.

I will say always have buscopan and ibs sennokot tablets in house.... they will help pain it stops the cramps and pain of the ibs and the bloating and also really good for period

Pains...

Thank you everyone for your replies. Since my A&E visit above things have taken a real turn... I went to my DR after and we wanted to rule out any ovarian problems causing the pain (which I specifically felt more so on my lower right side). My DR sent me for an ultrasound of the pelvis and stomach (due to the IBS issue she put stomach on it aswell) something showed up in ultrasound on my right upper side and I was asked to stay for a CT scan that morning. Lonnng story short as it was such a horrific wait i was told by my DR that a mass/tumour has showed up on the CT scan on my adrenal gland. I need an MRI next to see what this tumour is!! Scared is not the word!! The positives are it has not spread anywhere near it, nor in blood or bones etc and isn’t aggravating the glands around it either it’s a solid formed mass of 6cmx5cmx6cm so quite a size aswell!! Mri is next Monday and appointment with specialist the Monday after that. My Dr said this was an accidental find as nothing would have pointed her towards that!! This week I have to get hormone bloods done to test for several different things and also a 24hr urine collection!!! Absolutely scundered but hoping for the best news possible. She doesn’t think this has anything to do with my IBS at all.

I read celery helps restore the digestive system. I've been eating it every day for about a week. I think it's helping.

in reply to Cathy63

I heard that aswell! I like it in soups but it’s too warm at the moment for soup, lol. Body builders swear by it apparently on the run up to shows to keep them from getting constipated!!

It's good in soups. I've been eating it raw. Sometimes I'll dip it in a little ranch dressing.
