Advice Please

I am a 60 year old lady who has had IBS for 14 plus years. However since Christmas symptoms have become much more pronounced. Severe constipation I used to take 1 and a half movicol satchets a night with ok results, now I am having to take 2 and a half with fybogel plus linseed on breakfast cereal to barely pass a B/O. Stomach very bloated and guts highly sensitive to just about anything, even drinks. Can anyone suggest anything that might help? Would aloe vera juice sooth the gut?

Thank you

You should see your gastroenterologist to update him on the changes and see what he says.

Poor you - I can so empathise with how you're feeling. Have you tried flax oil - tablespoon at bed time, deep relaxation breathing (it will work eventually but you need to do it for 10 minutes 3 times daily) and magnesium? I was advised not to overdo it on probiotics but just take Yakult, which has helped me. I expect stress about not 'going' adds to the problem which is why deep breathing helps because it switches off the 'stress response' and relaxes the gut. Good luck - do hope you you feel better soon. I'm 71 by the way and have had post infectious IBC for 10 years - came on overnight and I can empathise with everyone's frustration about this condition.

Thanks Rozzy I might try the magnesium route.

From what I've read on the web, aloe vera will only make matters worse. It's very strong and can cause cramping.

I completely agree with you about aloe Vera causing cramping. So do high strength multistrain probiotics. I rely on my local health food shop for advice, but now I've changed my mind. I don't think they know enough about side effects. Also they're a business that want your money. My doctor told me to stop taking the probiotics and I've also stopped Aloe Vera juice. One thinks such products are good for the gut, but they can make matters worse.

A doctor recently told me to drink a litre and a half of hot water a day, roughly 6-8 glasses. I've found it very beneficial and much more soothing than cold drinks. It also helps with constipation.

Hi...I've had IBS for 40 years ..I have tried everything I can for constipation, over the years ...and have found one thing I swear by to help me ...its Sunsweet Californian Prune Juice..It's amazing and a glass or two when needed helps immensely ..I get it from Morrisons ..Hope you find this some help.

So glad the prune juice helps you! Anything helpful is good news.

A heads up about prune juice, though- it is very high in FODMAPS and can cause issues for folks who are sensitive to them, which many IBS sufferers are.
