Hi,

Have been reading about fodmaps. Some of the foods on the high fodmap list I am ok with. Should I eliminate them even if I don't have issues?

What's a fodmap? I have ibs but never heard of it

in reply to

It's a diet for people with IBS.

in reply to

I have IBS but I am not on a diet I just cannot eat bread at all and have to limit pasta and rice

in reply to

It works for you?

in reply to

Cutting out bread and minimising those above. I still get flare ups from stress but if I eat bread I may aswell die I am so unwell

in reply to

I'm in control of mine, tomatoes and pizza base were my worst things to eat.

When I get a flare up I eat a banana and it sorted it out.

in reply to

Yeah pizza isn't good for me. I do take colofac and buscopan. My tummy swelled up so much once someone asked me when my baby was due

in reply to

That bad about the swelling.

I take probiotics and coconut oil, helps me big time.

in reply to

Yeah I was so embarrassed

Probiotics are good what do you have coconut oil in

in reply to

Just eat the oil or put it in tea/coffee.

in reply to

Ah ok that's cool I may try it

in reply to

Another thing is anti histamine tablets ,the tablets for allergies like hay fever etc work for some people.

I wouldn't if you have no issues with those foods no. I never did the whole fodmap diet as I saw a dietician for my IBS for over a year as underweight and obviously that would have made me dangerously thin so couldn't risk it. So we worked on it gradually. She discharged me a few months ago as my IBS has improved a lot my weight stabilised and I'd joined a gym.

Brilliant you found a way to help yourself 😀

Hi Terp58 if you know your fine with certain foods then you won't need to cut them out. If you were unsure they suggest eliminated foods then reintroducing them to see which ones you respond to x

Fodmap really helps in some aspects of IBS. In simple terms scientists have identified which carbohydrates are digested in different parts of the gut. Avoiding those that digest in the upper gut helps in many ways. Especially effective for persons with constipation whom by no fault of theirs can have episodes of very smelly wind also.

However don't just do fodmap. Insist you see a dietitian. I can vouch for this it really does help. It is not a cure but a way to mange this bloody frusrating condition.
