Daily Imodium / Loperamide = Occasional discomfort / short, sharp pain in back passage area. Trapped wind? Anyone else experienced similar?

Hello everyone. Just wondering if this occasional pain and discomfort might be trapped wind? Or if anyone else who takes imodium daily has experienced this? Not constipated, bowel movements are regular. Thanks to all who reply.

Half to 1 tablet a day as a preventative measure. However, I do increase the dose on stressful days e.g. I had a job interview last week and took 3 tablets in a 24 hour period.

I take neither of those drugs, but short, sharp pains in the rectum are not uncommon in IBS and I get them sometimes. Perhaps it's a side effect of the medication but it could just be a symptom of your IBS.

Sharp pain in rectum is probably proctalgia, a muscle spasm quite common if you suffer from IBS.

Short sharp pain in rectum is muscle spasms. Can get suppositories from gp as i did if really painful. Good luck.

Check out a platform to make having bowel movements easier - may help the pain. There is one called "squatty potty" SEE INTERNET- which forms a platform for your feet so that the bowel passage is in a better position for passing bowel movements. This can also be achieved by using a box or books instead at the base of the loo that you can put your feet on - to see if it helps. That is if you don't want to buy anything. The squatting position is more natural and is used in many countries still. Just an idea for you to try.

I thought it was my piles. To me It feels like cramp up inside ,which I suppose is a muscle spasm . If I sit on the edge of something hard ( wooden chair or even edge of toilet seat) it gradually goes away.

Yes I also experience short sharp pains in the rectum - I hadn't had it for a while and only last week experienced the pain for around 1/2 an hour. Not pleasant as I was travelling in a car with no toilet stops anywhere.

Hope it gets better for you.

it can be an infected or swolen internal piles /hemorrhoids that are inside the rectum.

also trapped wind can cause this type of pain as the problem with imodium (if taken regularly) is that it keeps some gas and waste trapped inside and makes it difficult for them to pass out easily..that is why I try to avoid taking it daily and give myself a break from it once in a while.
