Has anyone here had tests for SIBO on the NHS? If so can you confirm whether you were diagnosed with SIBO? Also what treatment did you receive? Ive been researching SIBO to some extent and think this may be causing my IBS like symptoms. Any information you can provide would be really useful. Many thanks.

Hi,

I had an NHS test for SIBO. I understand that not all hospitals do it, but there should be one that does somewhere in your area. My test was clear so I don't know too much about treatment although I believe it can involve a lengthy course of antibiotics and a special diet.

Thanks, you actually answered my next question. From looking around it looks as though everyone that takes the test is positive for SIBO so i was wondering if anyone is actually clear. Do you know whether they tested with Glucose or Lactulose as ive heard Glucos can produce false positives?

I was given glucose, so what you've heard obviously isn't always true!

Thanks Rosie, can i ask what your symptoms are/were? Im currently experiencing Nausea and fatigue and intermittent diarrhea along with depression (likely becuase I feel so crap every day). Are these symptoms of SIBO?

Thanks,

in reply to ivesy

Symptoms for me were sudden, urgent bowel movements, incomplete bowel emptying, lots of wind and gas, heartburn, indigestion, upper and lower abdominal pain. I think you're right in that depression is caused by the rubbish way you feel every day.

I'm now waiting for an appt to see a neurosurgeon as both my GP and colorectal consultant think that my problems could be caused by lower spinal issues (nerves in the L vertebrae control organs in the pelvic cavity).

In the meantime, I've found that what works for me is to avoid wheat, barley, rye, rice, the onion family and all stone fruit.

Hi, I am interested in your post as I have scoliosis at the bottom of my spine and compression on my discs which are causing a lot of discomfort, I am now experiencing problems with tummy pain and constipation , I have a tortuous colon believed to be caused by abdominal surgery which I have been told should not be giving me pain and my colon apparently looked healthy when I had a colonoscopy, so am confused as to what is going on , I am starting a Low FODMAP diet next week and am wondering now after reading your post if there may be a connection with my tummy and back, just wondered if you have any advice

What is SIBO?

in reply to MaggieJemima

It stands for small intestine bacterial overgrowth. It's worth getting a test.

I went private and had a SIBO test which proved highly positive. Had two lots of antibiotics one of which I had to drop as I could not stand it but I did feel SO much better after. My IBS is still with me and I avoid foods which trigger symptoms but I can manage it all much better and I don't feel so horribly ill.

Hi Salti, was this in the uk? I have private health through work, did you request it through your GP?

I was referred by a private GP to a gastro and went through many tests before this breath test which was done in a different clinic. It was about £100 and you have to fast for awhile then spend 3 to 4 hours blowing into a bag at regular intervals. Just ask for a breath test. In fact I did two, one was for lactose which was ok and the other was for SIBO.

Sorry to intrude, but I was wondering if you can just book in for the trst? Or do you have to be booked in by gp. I'm from West Sussex but would travel the world just to find out what's wrong...

You have to be referred by someone, dr, nutritionist etc. If you have a look at the website you will see how to go about it. I had the Breath Hydrogen Test which showed SIBO. Also had the Hydrogen Lactose Intolerance test but that was clear. Hope this helps.
