Been given 135mg mebeverine and was worried it might make me ill so cut it in half and took only half. Then read it must be taken whole. I took it about an hour ago and just feel bit sleepy. Will it make me ill???????? Please advise im anxious enough as it is.

Hi

Mebeverine is an anti spasmodic so all it should do is slow the stomach and bowel - I had it for six months and to be honest did nothing for me but from memory it didn't have any bad side effects and isnt a drug that makes you sleepy. It sounds like you are working yourself up - perhaps try focusing on your breathing - am sure everything will be fine. X

Definitely don't worry about that - as gross as it is, I chew all my tablets - for some reason I can't swallow them! I remember tasting the mebeverine - it was terrible! Have a peppermint tea and relax x

Halfing a tablet won't make you ill, we do it all the time in the wards. Mebeverine shouldn't make you sleepy, you've probably just stressed yourself put about this until you've crashed. If you're really worried take the whole tablet next time as that's the dose you've been prescribed, not half a tablet. Hope this helps!

I've been taking Mebeverine for nine months, one tablet three times a day, and, although I'm not sure that it's doing a great deal, it certainly hasn't made me ill. You're obviously very anxious, but I can assure you that I have had no bad side effects at all.

You are stressing yourself out because you haven't followed the instructions. I do exactly the same thing as I have anxiety disorder. It won't make you ill and definitely not sleepy. The only thing is it won't do what it's intended to do because you haven't took enough. The only reason they suggest not splitting the shell is because it tastes bloody awful. I personally found mebeverine awful didn't do a thing so changed to buscopan and alverine. Your fine just relax

Mebeverine does not have any side-effects as far as I'm aware. It certainly should not make you sleepy. It won't make you ill - you can take up to three of those a day.

Stopy worrying and follow your doctor's instructions.

No never made me sleepy it just stops the stomach cramping. It's possible your IBS is anxiety triggered in which case you will make yourself ill! Please calm down and de-stress hunni as otherwise you won't get any better.

Hi Sam,

I agree with others. With Fybogel Mebeverine, there is 135mg of Mebeverine granules. They aren't coated and taste really bitter. I can't honestly say that it - or any other antispasmodic has ever done anything for me.

btw - it is also sold over the counter as Colofac.

I take mebeverine up to three times a day. It certainly doesn't make me ill It is quite helpful in the treatment of IBS but not a cure! I have had IBS a long time and for me it's a case of taking certain medications when necessary. Mebeverine ,I take daily. hope this helps

Have you tried dietitian instead. Since we had a list from the nhs dietitian and cut out some food, my son ibs had improved from constant pain day and night to now only twice a week sometimes day sometimes night. Some food caused a lot of gas as the stomach can't break it down properly and we now learn walking helps get rid of it tho very painful to start with but gradually when he farted, felt tons better. We sometimes used loperamide to control diarhrea as that was agony and painkiller to help but he had not needed much reliance on that since we follow the dietitian list.
