Hi,

According to what I've read on here, only too many doctors are ready to promote the idea of IBS being caused by stress. Whilst I think that stress can make symptoms of any illnesss worse, I don't believe for one minute that it's ever the in-depth cause of IBS and neither does my doctor.

What symptoms do you have? Do you have constipation, diarrhoea or alternating bouts of both? Have you tried any elimination diets or medication of any kind?

Sorry for the questions, but the more info you give, the more appropriate the advice we can give you.

Love your little dog!

The low FODMAPs elimination diet seems to be very successful for a lot of people on here - including me. It's not just a fad and is science-based. It could well be worth trying and I can give you more info on it if you're interested. You should have been referred to a dietitian by your doctor who, I'm sure, would have suggested it to you.

My doctor has recently given me a trial run on a medication called colestyramine (one of its commercial names is Questran). This is used to treat Bile Acid Disorder/Malabsorption (BAD/BAM) which causes IBS-D symptoms and is greatly under-recognised by the medical profession. Although I'm still fiddling around with the dosage, it seems to be having an unprecedented beneficial effect and may also be an option for you if your doctor is open to suggestions. Try Googling it, there's lots of info about it out there.

Stress makes most conditions worse. I've given up searching for cause and just hope for a good day. I have IBS-D and find massage, FODMAPS low diet, and stress reduction great. What kind thing can I do for myself today? Love your yorkie. I miss my grand-dogs, both yorkies.

I definitely think stress makes IBS worse. Having had it for 10 years following the death of my husband I've had every test going, been put on lots of different medication, and recently found that taking Alverine Citrate and having 4 sessions of Hypnotherapy has helped a lot. I was at the stage of worrying constantly about my stomach playing up, which of course made it worse, which then worried me more - it just became a vicious circle! I have now learnt how to relax more and if I'm feeling uptight I find listening to a few tracks on the CD the hypnotherapist gave me helps a lot. I can feel my stomach settling down and stop churning, and I don't worry as much about how it will behave when I go out. Give it a try, and good luck to you! There doesn't seem to be any cure for IBS, it's just a question of learning to manage the condition. Hope this helps.

Hope you manage to find a good hypnotherapist. Will be interested to hear how you get on. All the best to you.

Nobody seems to think it strange that stomach ulcers or heart attacks can be brought on by stress, so why not IBS? I've seen a fair few clients with IBS and helping them with stress has always borne good results. The mind and the body are indivisible. What goes on in one will affect the other. "I'm so nervous I could puke!" That's a perfectly credible statement. Soldiers commonly soil themselves before going into battle. Why, then, shouldn't prolonged stress have an effect upon the digestive system?

Nice yorkie, by the way. We have two yorkies aged three months.
