I suffer from awful bloating and burping which can go on for hours. Some nights it will wake me and then I have to sit up and wait for the pain and burping to settle. This has been going on for over a year. I finally saw my GP who sent me for a scan of my Gallbladder and then a Gastroscopy. Both came back clear so now told I must have IBS and told to look up the Low FODMAP diet and see how I go! I do not have constipation or diarrhoea and never have. I feel a bit lost really. Is this IBS? Any help gratefully received.

Do I really have IBS?
I'm new to this and I don't know if I have IBS either because I don't get any pain or constipation although the other symptoms match. Maybe each case is different.
It could well be the start of IBS. I started out with the burping and bloating too and, after a gastroscopy, was told by my gastro that it must be IBS and that it would probably 'develop' into the more common symptoms of d and/or c plus extras and was sent home with an IBS diet sheet which proved useless. It turned out that she was right and within weeks I had increased pain, diarrhoea and wind. At that time, the NHS hadn't got behind the FODMAP diet and it was only thanks to this website that I discovered it. I've now been on it for 6 months and have never looked back except when I get over-enthusiastic and slide too far off it. NHS dietitians have now been trained in this regime and your GP should be referring you to one rather than telling you to go it alone as it's rather more than just a matter of eliminating foods one at a time. Not only that, but the general info on the web about the diet (mostly posted by the ill-informed) is confusing, out-of-date and often just plain wrong.
Go back to your GP and ask for a referral - you're entitled to one.
Dr's use the label 'ibs' for a wide range of gastro/ abdominal symptoms that they cannot figure out.
Hester I would suggest you try acupuncture. Look up a local one on the BAcC website.
