Shocking letter from cardiology
I’ve just had a shocking letter from the cardiology department of my local hospital which has really shocked and upset me. It was from a telephone conversation I had with them some weeks ago having been transferred to their care after having a mitral valve replacement on the 7th of October 2020 At Barts

Need help knowing how to talk to my brother in ICU
Hi community, my brother Michael is in icu and has severe brain damage however when I visit sometimes he's incredibly sharp and the brother I know and other times he is so distant. He has had a tracheotomy and is on a ventilator. I have read a lot of testimonials from icu patients talking about hallucinations

Can anyone put my mind at rest
Tracheostomy
fitted to begin weaning, learning to walk again very difficult times. I pushed myself to come home for Christmas 2020 after two months in hospital.

My brother is on day 5 off sedation but he's still not waking up.. Is this common?
He finally got his
tracheostomy
fitted and the medical team began taking him off sedation 5 days ago but he has not responded. We are so worried that he won't wake up. His brain scan was clear so is this normal? Has anyone else had the same experience?

Rehabilitation after anti NMDA receptor encephalitis
Ellina began to talk, to walk without support, and her
tracheostomy
was removed. She says it's September 2020, that she's at home in her Mom's room. That I went to school today and other nonsense. They're still in rehab.

What does recovery look like (non-COVID)
At what point do we start thinking that the
tracheostomy
is 'permanent'? The place where she is specializes in long term
tracheostomy
care and weaning. According to them she's still on a weaning protocol and that this is a 'marathon not a sprint'.

Dad 8 weeks on - tracheostomy for nearly 3 weeks
Hi all, I love this group esp as some of you are going through what we are going through and some of you great people have come through on the winning side! So dad's sedation is being lowered and we got out first smile and some response on Saturday. We did all get very excited and started to ask him

My dad 64 with a tracheostomy - Sedation? Steroids? progress
Finally after 4 weeks they gave him a
tracheostomy
and he is on 45 Oxygen, pressure 22 (not sure if this number is good or bad!) and peep 5. I've been told do not focus on the numbers but all of this is so so painful!

Another update on my dad
We’ve broached the subject of a
tracheostomy
again and the doctor’s still reluctant, but said another option they may explore is a mini
tracheostomy
to manage secretions. I asked what their confidence level of a successful extubation would be and they think 50/50.

So today the doctor said the next step would be to do a
tracheostomy
he said it’s the safest plan next to do. His oxygen and bloods are ok does this sound promising?? Xx

Speaking tracheostomy
They changed her
tracheostomy
to a speaking trach so at moment she is only doing 15min weaning process 4x a day. So within this 15 min she can talk. She is still very unwell and relies a lot on the support from the ventilator. She caught an infection called VRE which doesn’t seem to be coming down.

Collapsed lung and reintubated again
So mum got taken out of
tracheostomy
yesterday and they put her back on today as she has a collapsed lung. Does anyone have experience with this? It’s so heartbreaking as we thought she was finally out of the woods and now she’s back on ventilator.

How do I cope with video calls
He was given a
tracheostomy
last week and today I was able to have a video call with him for the first time. Obviously he can not speak, but I think he recognised me.

Doctors to make decision in 24hours
My husband has been in icu for 28days now, since 12th of January due to covid, was sedated and on ventilator, after 7 days he had
tracheostomy
, planning to wean him off he wasn't tolerating. Few days after had infection and then sepsis, then he deteriorated.

Rehabilitation after icu
He has done really well and has had his
tracheostomy
removed and is not needing any additional oxygen. He is now eating solids so the feeding tube is also gone. However he is really struggling with his mobility.

Memory loss
The ventilator was taken away and no additional oxygen was needed and today they have removed his
tracheostomy
. He still has mobility issues which I know will take time to recover but what I am concerned about is his memory. He called me twice today to tell me the same thing.
