Medication change
Hi I was wondering if anyone has tried either 6 -
mercaptopurine
or Anti - TNF therapy? If so how was it? I've been on Azathioprine & Mycophenolate Mofetil both with no success. These have come up so I was wondering what they were like? Fighting on in hope something will work. :-)

Hi Luck at last
These medications, steroids and
mercaptopurine
have ravaged my body. I feel tired all the time, no energy, can't even manage the housework and today I have some pain in upper right abdomen...I look very pale as well, am just so fed up, there has to be alternative methods of treatment.

Mercaptopurine
is a chemotherapy drug so you can imagine the affect this is having on my body (2 years now). When I tried to lower the pred I has symptoms I did not recognise to be from AIH or PBC at first then the pain kicked in so went back on to 5 mg again.

My story
The consultant swapped me to 100mg of 6-
mercaptopurine
and everything normalised again. Then I developed a rash on my face, which became progressively worse. My joints ached and my hair started falling out dramatically. My mouth was permanently dry and sometimes I felt I was choking.

Fatigue with normal LTF's
So, I have had 3 very good blood results....NORMAL.....yes normal, so the steroids, urso and
mercaptopurine
are doing their job ( AIH/PBC), but I am fatigued, overweight which I was not before, cold all the time, I don't sleep well and many more.

Meaning of MCV and red blood cell distribution width?
My last 3 blood tests (6-
mercaptopurine
monitoring) have shown a slow but steady increase in mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and red blood cell distribution width. They are highlighted as "high".

Digestive issues.
I take urso 500 mg twice per day, prednisolone steroids, and
mercaptopurine
. I admit to not taking the urso as I was told to by my consultant but it tends to bloat me out and make me feel uncomfortable.

Just a little warning if you change GP Surgeries! I moved house (all of 4.9 miles) on the 20th of September, as of yesterday, (28/11/13)
Which means I am now stuck on
Mercaptopurine
(which is labelled as toxic when prescribed!) because nobody knows how to get me off them. Not an ideal situation !!

Immunosuppressant question
Started on Azathioprine a couple of months ago, had dreadful adverse reaction, last week tried again with
Mercaptopurine
(specialist did warn me I had 50/50 chance of similar, as chemically both drugs are very similar). Lo and behold, after one dose, I had similar reaction.

Lupus Pancreatitis
Another medical journal, "Annals of Gastroenterology", reported that patients on azathioprine (or
mercaptopurine
, into which azathioprine is converted by the liver) who had inflammatory bowel disease stood a 3.1% increased risk of developing pancreatitis.

I am considering joining tomorrow but am a little daunted due to the fact I take steroids, urso and
mercaptopurine
for AIH/PBC overlap. I am concerned that the diet will not work because of the medication.

I have refractory coeliac disease
Biopsies taken from the small bowel however do show signs of coeliac and therefore I think your diagnosis of refractory coeliac has been confirmed beyond doubt " I have been prescribed steroids and
mercaptopurine
(chemotherapy tablets) for the 3rd time in 2 years.
