Hello I had a psa reading last June 2016 of 1.5 but having problems with going for a pee possible 10 to 15 times a day. Today I've had a psa reading of 0.6 but still same symptoms, is it possible it still could be cancer??

Hi,

you have similar symptoms to me in that I was also going to the toilet about every 20 mins or so during the day, a little less during the night (still getting up around 5 to 6 times a night). My problem was not that I could not pee but rather the flow was very poor, could be there for 5 mins or so and only passing around 30 to 50 ml volume not a lot at all.

PSA came back at 4 I am 63 so around the normal level for my age, DRE however showed a definite enlargement of prostate with rough surface consistent with possible cancer. Sent for MRI scan which confirmed presence of two relatively large tumours within the prostate PIRADS score 4 on a scale of 1 - 5 so quite a worry at that point. Next step was Template Biopsy ( 50 cores taken ) and sure hell did I feel like a pin cushion afterwards, still sore and tender now after 3 weeks. But the great news was that I do not have cancer but two benign tumours.

Now on the watchful waiting list, going for a further PSA test in around 8 weeks or so and a possible repeat MRI to see how things are going. Have opted for the watch and wait rather than the operation to remove the prostate.

Urologist says the problems with going to the toilet are related to the enlarged prostate causing pressure on the bladder and the pipework that passes through the prostate being compressed due the enlarged prostate, so not cancer as such, hence the poor flow and low volume.

Possible yes. Likely, not very. There are a few highly aggressive prostate cancers which do not produce much PSA. Benign prostatic enlargement is much more common. You should talk with your doctor about it, if you haven't yet.

What did your urologist tell you about "benign" prostate cancer tumor???? Did your doctor mean it was Gleason 6????

Hi Darryl,

Apologies for slow reply, unfortunately I was not given a Gleason score, I was just told it was all ok and the two tumours were Benign and that for now I shall be monitored closely to keep an eye on the tumours.

I had low PSA counts like yours for several years. The GP thought my prostate was OK. I had need to urinate frequently at night so I was sent to a urologist. After many tests I finally had a prostate biopsy which showed that all sections of my prostate contained either Gleason 8 or 9 cancer cells and the cancer was surrounding my urethra and rectum. Radiation and ADT was done but after two years the cancer spread to my bones, lungs and liver. Right now the liver mets are the most dangerous for me. I am on chemotherapy and ADT. While my PSA has risen some it is still not high like many on this site indicate they have.

Low PSA prostate cancers result from highly deformed but very aggressive cancer cells. Do not trust the PSA values, it works for most but not all prostate cancer patients.
