Osteoarthritis in people over 40 is apparently pretty common so it's quite possible for it to start a little early. It also seems to depend on lifestyle, I have it and the fact I marched around for years in the RAF and did weight training probably didn't help my knees or spine! Also if people have lupus they seem to collect a whole host of other related illnesses like arthritis so all in all I'd say it's not really surprising.

Just as an aside, I have osteo arthritis in my knees and spine and I have found that exercise really, really helps and I don't get anywhere near the pain I do if I don't exercise. I know it sounds weird as you'd think it would make it worse but it doesn't. I actually use rebounding to control it (mini trampoline) and if you look 'rebounding' up you'll see that it's recommended for arthritis and obviously as lupus loves exercise it's helping with that too. Because it takes place on a soft surface there's no pressure on the joints. It's definitely worth a go if you don't exercise already.
