Hi everyone - I am new here and I need someones help! I have been overweight forever. I have type 2 diabetes and a job sitting at a computer all day (barring 1/2 hour for lunch. I have a busy family life - getting home at 6 and cooking for the family - then the usual washing, drying, washing up rounds etc and I need to be in bed by 9.30 as i am a heavy sleeper (I am up at 6.30am for the rounds of work before I troll off to my PC job!). How and what should I do to increase my exercise - are there things I can do sat at my desk? Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi there, well done for making the decision to change things! Your situation is quite specific and I am wondering whether you might be better finding information on what you can do, seated or otherwise, via a diabetes website? There are always little exercises you can do at a desk and having a quick break and moving around helps but maybe the diabetes.org.uk website could help as they have a forum and can put you in touch with people in your area, which can be great for motivation. You really do need to carve out some time for yourself though, your day sounds packed - is there any chance you can get some help with the household chores? Giving yourself 30 minutes to an hour per day would really go a long way towards helping you achieve what you want if you can use that time to be really active. Sorry I can't be more specific but I wish you the very best and please let us know how you get on.

The things that worked for me when family was young: Get up half hour earlier each day, put on gear and out for walk then start day as normal . Hard the first month but gets easier.

Go for a 15 minute walk lunchtime. Hard too cos I'd rather chat.

Immediately after work before getting home.

Can you prep some of the meal night before? Someone else do washing up and drying? Anyone over 3yrs old CAN do something

Hello,

I was going to type some stuff out for you to do but I thought it would be easier to give you a link.

I hope they will help you out.

If you want to lose some weight though you need to change your eating habits.

Good luck!

Not knowing anything about the impact of diabetes on exercise, I don't know if this will be relevant, but I've started doing the Strength and Flex podcasts as I do household chores! I'm only on week one at the moment, so I don't know how viable it'll be, but I walk around the house picking things up (occasionally with a spot of bad dancing when nobody's watching!) for warm up and cool down, then I'm invariably folding something whilst doing the seated exercises, or I'll leave something simmering in a pan whilst my arms are otherwise occupied!

It's probably not how Laura wanted me to do it, but it works for me!
