Hi, recently Ive gained a lot of weight ( 1 stone in 2 months) and I'm worried. I've been trying to lose weight for over a year now with dieting and exercise. I suffer from sciatica and my back hurts on a regular basis. Sometimes when I do exercise I over do it and end up hurting myself. I don't know what to do any more, please help me.

Hi, I suffer with a bad back, ever since I had my son almost 4 years ago, it is horrible, coz it limits what you can do, maybe you need to time yourself, and have an alarm that goes off, and then gradually start doing things for longer, it's hard when you're keen, and really want to make a difference to yourself, but what you will end up doing is going around in circles, you'll excersise, over do it and hurt yourself, so then you will be back to square one, because you will have to rest, so maybe take it slowly, really slowly, and if say 5 -10 minutes is ok, do it again the next day, if your body is not with you, you won't get anywhere, give your body the chance to catch up, even if it is slow, as long as you keep it up, you will get there, just don't over do it so you can't do anything at all, something is better than nothing, even I'm learning that I can't do what I used to be able to do, but if I take my time, and I work out what's good for me and my body, then that's just got to be the way it is, and it may take longer than everyone else, but I'm not everyone else, and they may not have a bad back or nerve pain like you,

Good luck hun, I really hope that you find your perfect pace, and work from there

Thank you Zoe, sometimes I feel like I really do have to push myself with losing weight. I know I need a high cardio workout to shift the weight but instead of doing 10 minutes on a running machine at level 7 maybe I'll do it at level 4 and for 15-20. A lot of people have been suggesting swimming as well, but I can't swim :(

Hi

I would consider getting your GP to refer you to a lifestyle advisor who can tell you exactly what is on offer locally in terms of NHS exercise classes and similar, also chat with you about your lifestyle and how to alter it to make the most improvements. They can also refer you to a dietician if necessary and other forms of help.

I had to go to hospital today because I was on a bus the braked abruptly. A nurse and doctor checked me out and said that its a trapped nerve and inflamed muscles in my back. They gave me some dihydrocodine and sent me on my way. I feel like I can't continue on like this any more and on top of that my dog Harri is dying

Hi Tara

It might be more beneficial for you to do a little exercise a day rather than over doing it. Start by going for a short walk everyday and going a little further as you become comfortable with the distance. Also as suggested on a number of sites, park your car further away and walk to where you are going. If you don't drive and use public transport, get off a stop before your one and walk the rest of the way. There is no need to over do it.

Other things that help are being more active around the house. If you can manage it, wash the floors by hand rather than using a mop. Hoover every day and clean the oven any housework burns calories. Plus whilst your active you are less likely to eat as your mind will be on what ever you are doing. Crafting, reading and other hobbies are a good way to keep your mind occupied which in turn will make you less likely to think of food.

I too suffer with sciatica from time to time and I find I suffer with it more the heavier I am. I hope these ideas help. If you put them into action along with a health eating plan, you will start to notice your weight going down.

Good luck

Danielle
