Do you agree that arthritis pain (especially knee pain) and weight gain is a vicious cycle?

Do you think having pain in your knees and hips stop you from being more physically active? And if pain does make you less active does that mean you gain weight and that makes the pain even worse? What are your experiences with this vicious cycle?

Yes this has been a big problem for me, especially as I have had 3 joints go at the same time- hip and 2 knees. Also, I have Polymyalgia for which the only treatment is steroids which made me gain weight too. The NHS would not operate on me because of my weight and I tried bariatric surgery but they would not operate because I was on steroids! I felt I had reached a dead end.

Luckily, I found a private surgeon who has given me a hip replacement and recently a partial knee replacement. The NHS has relented and, when I appealed , has decided to fund my second knee, acknowledging that I had tried everything to lose weight.

My recovery is not straightforward because I have been so disabled for so long and because of the polymyalgia, but at least I am getting somewhere!

I think that orthopedic surgeons are going to have to rethink the "rules" on who can get a knee replacement because generally people are getting heavier, and that is something that is happening in every country. I hope yours goes well and then you can get back to being active. My mother has started hiking again after hers it made such a difference to how active she has been.

It slows me down a little bit. I get mad at myself, because I do the same workouts, eat right and drink water. And cut down on the soda a little.

yes, the reality is that knee pain slows you down and then you are more likely to gain weight, and that hurts your knees more. It's harder to be physically active if you don't much feel like walking. We need to figure out the movements and activities that work! BTW my daughter has banned soda and juice from the house because of the sugar! Shall I send her over? ;-)
