Health goals past and present, besides staying alive and kicking!

My goal forty years ago was to be able to walk across the hanger floor without falling to the ground due to extreme sudden pain in one or the other knee. It was never taken seriously by the RAF Medics at the time. Then twenty years later my goal was to straighten my legs in a hot bath without resorting to force, after two atheroscapies to remove a Baker's cyst in each knee I was able to straighten them. Now I have just one goal and that is to stay alive and kicking while trying to increase the muscle power in both legs. Since I found I am deficient in B12 I am addressing this myself and getting stronger every week, I hope to repair the nerve damage to my legs and knees, but as it has been going on for years the chances are slim.

My daughter has Bakers cysts in both knees. Drs have refused to do anything. So far two have burst. Did yours recur after treatment?

Hi, sorry to hear your daughter has them, mine occurred within months of each other, no sooner had I had one operated on the other knee came out with one! They used to cause a muscle or tendon to move over them every step I took, which was very wearing/tiring and eventually painful. I had them operated on privately as the waiting list on the NHS was approaching two years at the time. They have not come back in the twenty years since. Wishing you well.

Thank you so much for sharing the information. I keep trying to tell my daughter to see someone privately and I’ll pay as the NHS keep fobbing her off. She’s been told she has no cartilage in either knee but is too young for treatment so might need to take painkillers for another 15-20 years!

Hi the surgeon told me I had holes in the cartilage on each knee, and they would get worse as the years went on. There was at the time trials of implanting "plugs" of cartilage into areas where it was missing.

Forty years ago in the RAF a Sargent who was a long distance runner had his cartilage removed (whatever that really means) in both knees, yet was still running 15 miles a day!

Jointpain,

I have some knee problems due to torn medial miniscus and sometimes get some swelling, but nowhere near what you experience with the Baker's cysts, I have no experience with any sort of treatments for this condition, but I did some research and you may wish to check these articles:

Wishing you the best.

Thank you for the links. I’d never heard of Bakers cysts until one burst in my daughter’s knee. She’s been told they’ll refill and same could happen again. Very unpleasant.

Hi, I was in the RAF too. left back in 1994. Where were you stationed during your career? I was mainly around the Abingdon and Brize Norton area but ended my career in St Mawgan, Cornwall. A friend of mine and, funnily enough his daughter have recently had Bakers cysts removed. They are doing quite well though the Dad doesn't do enough exercise and is always being nagged by his wife. The daughter being so much younger is very over weight so this will affect her eventually though she is doing well at the moment. I do wish she would lose weight as heart problems also run in their family so as my Mother-in-Law would have said she is digging her own grave with a knife and fork.

Hi, I left after nine years in 1983, mainly served at Lyneham, on Hercules engines. Seeing a physiotherapy guy Wednesday morning for my back, I will mention my knees too, but not expecting much in the way of help. I reckon the best doctor is your self, so long as you can research, which thankfully the interweb allows one to do. Be careful to check out all the drugs you take and any interactions with each of them. Actual Doctors do not do this satisfactorily. Keep kicking.

Fancy you being at Lyneham on the Hercules. Flew out of Lyneham many times for various reasons including Falkland Islands. Frequently used Hercules Aircraft from Lyneham for work at a trials unit. You probably worked on them!

Do mention your knees to the physio as there probably will be something you can do that will help.

You are absolutely right about being your own best physician and about checking on medication. At least three times I have been given something that was either not suitable for my condition - one thing did the opposite of what I needed, or interacted with another consition I had or medication. I always read the leaflet with the meds and look them up.

Take good care of yourself and good luck with the physio tomorrow. Funnily enough I have an appointment with them tomorrow afternoon too. I am hoing they can work out what is causing the cramp in the bottom of my leg as the consultant said it is not my knee causing the cramping pains and they are getting a bit much - something else to keep me awake!
