How to trash your knees without really trying...

Hi, I'm Chancery and I'm an alcoholic.. Sorry, just kidding - couldn't resist! My knee pain story goes back to around when I was 43 or so and living on the Isle of Orkney. We decided to get bikes so we could cycle to the nearest town as we didn't have a car. I bought an old second-hand thing which either had no gears or just two. It was a cheap bike and no great shakes. The route to town was up a very steep hill called Wideford and my bike made you do all the work. My knees started hurting quite soon into our bike adventures, but I cycled on through the pain, not wanting to be a stick-in-the-mud. Subsequently I damaged both knees and they simply never got better. I've never been on a bike since, which I regret.

I'm now 61 and my knees are stiff and non-bendy, but they don't hurt me on a day-to-day basis, which is good. Unfortunately though no longer strong enough to do anything with them other than walk, but at least I can do that. So the moral of this story, children, is when your body makes it plain you are over-taxing it - LISTEN! If I had I might still be able to cycle and hunker down without needing a rail to pull myself back up again!

Chancery,

thanks for sharing your story. Important that you keep your muscles as strong as possible as they do help protect your knees. Walking is still great exercise so keep moving! Movement is Life!

Couldn't agree more, Mary, that's why you ned to respect your limits and keep your joints and muscles functioning well as long as you can.

Chancery,

Consider taking a hylauronic joint supplement - really makes a gi differnce. I suspect that you may have tissue damage such that you have knots or "adhesions" in your knee areas. I too have knee issues having broken both my medial miniscus in both knees. Surprisingly the knee that I had arthoscopic surgery is the worst, the one i left alone is the strongest. Surgeon was a highly rated "Minnesota Vikings knees" dude so it wasn't a hack.

You might try using some DMSO on your knees to help break up the knots and follow up with some emu oil on top.

Hi Solar, thanks for all the info. I didn't think it would be possible to improve the state of my knees now, after so many years of 'neglect' but I will definitely look into the things you suggest. Can you just clarify for me what DMSO is? I've Googled it but I'm not sure the scary sounding chemical they mention is what you mean!

Yes it sounds scary as it is really a cleaning solvent, but we and many others through out the world get relief and healing by using it.

I often use it to "drag" something like Emu oil as it is a carrier - takes what you put on it down into the skin as it IS a sort of penetrating fluid. I also find that it busts up fibrous tissues making them softer over time. Inflamation relief is usually felt in about 20m.

The story of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an unusual one. This by-product of the paper making process was discovered in Germany in the late 19th century. It’s a colorless liquid that gained notoriety for its ability to penetrate skin and other biological membranes.

Scientists discovered that they could use DMSO as a transportation device to pass small molecules through skin. Since then, scientists have researched the potential benefits and risks of using DMSO to treat a variety of conditions. This research is ongoing.

That is comprehensive - thanks very much! I have sensitive skin and also seem to have developed drug hypersensitivity with age (or maybe I always had it!) so I am always very cautious about just slapping stuff onto myself! Thanks again.
