Anyone have a partial knee replacement? Need more information and input 56 average weight anyone who has done this procedure could really help if I knows is it still working how many years?

Dear SilverOwl, I have not had one myself but I know people who have partials and know about them. Partial replacements are great for folks that have arthritis localized to either the inner or outer aspect of the knee joint. Most patients who have a total knee on one side and a partial knee on the other prefer the partial knee---it feels more like their own knee (they have more of their own knee). The negative with the partial is that you can develop arthritis is the rest of the knee joint with time and then require removal of the partial replacement and conversion to a total replacement. So please talk with your orthopedic surgeon about what would be best for you.....but remember that keeping you muscles strong (especially your quads--muscles in front of your thigh) is important to your recovery and function. I agree with Mary’s comment.
I taught other surgeons and performed partial knee replacements for many years in my practice. I think it’s an excellent operation for the right patient. It can give you pain relief and durable function for a long period of time. I would suggest that you ask your orthopedic surgeon how many partially replacements he or she has done. I think experience is important with this procedure. The surgeons who do more partials tend to be good judges of whether you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure. The surgeons who have partial knee replacements in their “knee replacement toolkit” will regularly do 10 to 20% partials and the remainder will be full knee replacements.

Done correctly, they can last many years and can be converted to a total knee if needed in the future. It is really necessary to visit with an orthopedic surgeon who is familiar with these procedures to determine what is appropriate for you.
