Hi! My name is Nicki and I too have horrible debilitating arthritis in both knees. I'm only 47, was disabled at 30. Have had ACL reconstructions in both knees and twice in my right. After 2001, I have had multiple surgeries to scrape out arthritis which was 2 every year. In between surgeries I received shots either every 6 months or 3 months. I am very familiar with your situation too. Which type of shots are you getting? I had the best luck with cortisone shots. I loved it because it was practically instant relief or at least lots less pain. But any type of relief was better than not at all. Please get back with me because I'd love to help if I can.

Best of luck,

Nicki Thomas

Nicki,

Thank you for your reply to Marie. I just want to comment on the cortisone shots. There is some concern that repeated cortisone shots increase the risk of infection if knee replacement surgery is performed....so some doctors now don't like to keep giving the cortisone shots.

Marie, I am sorry to hear how bad our arthritis is. If the injection is not helping then maybe you would benefit from seeing a surgeon. Even if you are going to have knee replacement surgery, it is important that you try to get your muscles strong so that your rehab after surgery is better! If you are heavy, losing weight will also help. I know losing weight can be really difficult especially if your knees hurt BUT every 10 extra pounds of weight is like 30-60 pounds of extra stress on your knees!
