Hi Yayra thanks for joining and welcome!

Would like your advice: currently no health insurance, age 64, BMI 31, chronic osteoarthritis, rt knee very painful, getting stiff, left knee has same amt narrowing but no pain or flexibility issues; rt knee valgus getting worse; Have had synvisc twice over last 5 yr with no improvement, arthroscopy 5 yr ago, made pain worse; Currently have lost 35 of 70 lb overweight, trying to follow anti inflammatory diet, taking tumeric, osteobiflex, and fish oil supplements; can only walk 1/4 mi til pain gets too bad; am doing chair yoga, just started exercise bike- only doing 10 minutes but hoping to increase; no access to a pool.

What else can I add? I cannot take nonsteroidals due to a fib.

Sorry this is so long Thankyou

Dear Hoski,

Wow you are really taking a lot of positive actions for your knees. Congratulations on the weight loss---it is SO important. Every extra 10 pound of weight puts additional 30-60 pounds of pressure on our knee joints. so you can understand how important it is that you get to a good weight. There are some 'unloader' braces that might help---unfortunately as you state you have a valgus right knee (knock-kneed), the brace may not work as well as if you had a varus (Bow legged) deformity. The braces are expensive, which is another negative for you. I really think that you are doing so many wonderful things for your knees right now, and if you keep it up, you will feel improvement. Please please keep me updated on your progress.

Warm regards,

Mary

I will keep you updated. The bike isnt too painful after the first few rounds but my passion is walking down our country road. Should I push myself re walking? My limit is 1/4 mile til pain gets too much. Or wait til leg muscles stronger? I lost alot of ground this summer fighting hip bursitis, chiropractor was very helpful and gave me exercises to build quads, etc.

I suggest that you go the 1/4 mile for now till you get stronger. Pushing TOO much can inflame your knee (more that it is at baseline) so there is some 'balancing' to this. Do you use a cane to take some pressure off your one knee? That could help too....

I don't know if you will ultimately be able to avoid it with your valgus knee....but even if you do have to have it eventually you will have an easier and better recovery because your muscles are stronger and your weight is better!
