Reflex Anoxic Seizures (RAS) generally occurs mainly in young children but can occur in adolescents or adults. In children, RAS is caused by the vagus nerve being over stimulated due to unexpected pain/shock/fear. Although a child can experience their first attack in the first few days of life, generally it is around two years that they experience their first episode – when they begin walking and exploring. By the time they are five or six years the episodes occur less and less frequently and for some children have stopped completely. For some, when they enter puberty, these attacks can return for a few years but the triggers may be different – dehydration, low blood sugar or perhaps faced with blood, needles or medical matters. Some doctors may then refer to reflex syncope (vasovagal syncope) which is basically the adult term for RAS.
