Scleroderma and fructose malabsorption

Has anyone been dxd with scleroderma and than later on get fructose malabsorption? It seems I have scleroderma under control and now I’m struggling with fructose. I’m on a low fodmap diet now... seems weird that I would develop hashimotos, scleroderma and now fructose malabsorption. It’s like my body hates me! 😉

Not fructose, but constant GI problems, I'm a vegan anyway but I get awful SIBO and have been under dieticians etc, but nothing seems to help. I always seem to have something going on. I also have Sjogrens so can't eat anything spicy and am alcohol intolerant. Absolute nightmare sometimes.

Hi Roxie, not fructose but, like Missus Tee, I have constant GI problems. I also have difficulties absorbing generally as I am losing weight and developing osteoporosis despite great diet, exercise and good supplementation. Oh, and I’m coeliac. It’s quite a challenge sometimes!

I have scleroderma and for a long time my consultant thought I had osteoporosis. This has turned out to be poor absorbtion of calcium. I am possibly not absorbing iron also. Turns out that my VitD levels were low (people with Raynauds are always wrapped up against the cold when out so usually their levels are low) and with extra VitD (10,000 units once a week on prescription) calcium is being absorbed!

Hi Winifred, except for the low calcium, I too have the vitamin and mineral deficiencies you mentioned. It would be good if there was more research into it. But with saying that, I don’t know if you are taking Proton Pump Inhibitors (I do, can’t get by without them), but there is evidence that PPI’s effect the absorption of all the above, especially if taken long term.

Here is one of the many reports on PPI’s and their possible effects (If you have the time to read it or are you interested).

Thanks Gmargs - that is very interesting. I have been on 40mg Emozul daily for a long time. The trouble is that I suffer a lot without them!

Yes me too, just thought the information was interesting Re: malabsorption issues. And also when the Rheumatologist suggests a mega dose of a vitamin or mineral to boost our levels, will it really make a difference, considering most likely ’we’ are unable to absorb most of it? I must query this with them.

I developed a fructose intolerance over the past 7 years . I'm just now being considered for scleroderma. I also have psoriatic arthritis. The autoimmune diseases are so complex!

Thanks everyone . I’m also taking a lot of supplements vit d, b12, turmeric, fish oil and a multivitamin. Mizjewel5 it’s interesting that you’ve had fructose intolerance and now you might be developing scleroderma on top of the psoriatic arthritis. Stay safe and well all!
