Recent bloods show elevated creatine. Systemic sclerosis and secondary Raynauds sufferer.

Hi all I suffer with Systemic sclerosis and secondary Raynauds with GI issues including dyspagia, GORD and Oesophagitis. I’ve recently had bloods taken and they found I have elevated creatine, could this be linked to the disease? Can the test be a one off elevation? Feeling concerned. Any information greatly received.

Thank you 🙏🏻

Hi there, do you mean creatinine rather than creatine? Creatinine is a helpful marker of kidney function. If your levels are elevated then there might be issues with how they are working. Sometimes there are blips so you would always want a blood test like that repeated to double check, but otherwise your GP/Consultant will be looking at that area for concerns. Are your kidneys affected by your Systemic Sclerosis? Do you have high blood pressure?

Here is a helpful little blurb that comes from a reputable website:

Creatinine is a chemical waste product that's produced by your muscle metabolism and to a smaller extent by eating meat. Healthy kidneys filter creatinine and other waste products from your blood. The filtered waste products leave your body in your urine.

If your kidneys aren't functioning properly, an increased level of creatinine may accumulate in your blood. A serum creatinine test measures the level of creatinine in your blood and provides an estimate of how well your kidneys filter (glomerular filtration rate). A creatinine urine test can measure creatinine in your urine.

Hope that helps, don't worry just ensure that it is being monitored and if it remains high, that it is treated appropriately.

Hello Lucy, always good to hear your thoughts, my apologies, yes, Creatinine is what I meant. My kidneys so far haven’t been affected and my blood pressure is ok as far as I know although I do take low dose blood pressure meds for my Raynauds. Hoping it’s a blip and will be reassured (hopefully) after bloods and urine sample on Monday.

Thank you Lucy and hoping you’re well ❤️
