Hi everyone, I have limited scleroderma and have started to develop patches of depigmentation on my wrist...I have olive skin so it looking a bit weird. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice you can give would be helpful, I am panicing about it. They started to appear about 3 weeks ago and seem to be spreading slowly. Thank you everyone..

It could be morphea? What are the other areas affected? Most common area is the torso. Hope this helps

Hello there Wendy, I would be checking it out with your Consultant/Nurse or GP. It doesn't sound like Scleroderma...it sounds like Vitiligo. Vitiligo is a long-term condition where pale white patches develop on the skin. It's caused by the lack of melanin, a pigment in the skin.

Vitiligo can affect any area of skin, but most commonly occurs on the face, neck and hands, and in skin creases.

I have learnt over the years that just because you have one condition, it doesn't mean that everything is attributable to it, so make sure you get it checked out, and make sure that no one just assumes it is always linked to Scleroderma. It might be...but then again, many times it won't.

All my best

Thanks for those thoughts LucyJean. I didn't know about vitiligo. I've just replied to Wendy saying what my consultant said. Sometimes I think the "experts" don't know everything now I'm wondering if I've given her wrong advice and maybe my consultant has come up with wrong answers

Pigmentation changes are quite common in Scleroderma. I'm covered in hyper pigmentation which my consultant says is typical for my skin type. A lot of Afro type skins with scleroderma depigmentate and it does resemble vitiligo which is where the melanocytes are damaged! Please do check with your consultant though! Hugs 🤗

Hello Wendy

I too have scleroderma and the white patches you describe. I used to have fair skin but now my arms and legs look very tanned except for the white bits (just like yours). I understand that my darker parts are caused by scleroderma and the little white patches are where the pigmentation hasn't happened. My right leg looks quite strange with a big white patch in the middle of my shin. I don't think there's much we can do about it - it's just a skin thing caused by the disease. Try not to panic - my consultant seemed to think it is quite usual with scleroderma. But then sometimes they're not very forthcoming are they. Best this is try not to worry too much - just another annoying thing.

Hello everyone and thank you all so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. I had my review with my rheumatologist last week, which turned into a bit of a nightmare as I was seen by a new doctor. The outcome was that I forgot to mention the white patches. I will ring the rheumatology nurses tomorrow to see what advice they can give and try and get to see my usual rheumatologist if I can, she so far has been on the ball as far as scleroderma goes.

Best wishes

I too have white ...cannot say 'patches' as they look more like wee spots all over my arms like freckles I would say. I don't have anything larger than what others have commented on so guess I am lucky that they are really small....just hope they don't all 'join up'! :) I am fair skinned so my white 'freckles' are not so noticeable and I wear long sleeves anyway [Raynauds] so it doesn't bother me. But, definitely due to Ssc. as never had this before.

Hi again everyone, thought I'd post an update...my gp doesn't think it is vitiligo, said it doesn't meet the usual appearance...I haven't googled it so not really convinced by that. The rheumatologist nurse was non committal but said they would authorise an appointment for me ...advice given was to keep it covered in the sun....easy as I have raynauds and am rarely uncovered! Thanks again for all your responses...keep well🌷

Hi wendy I have this in little patches all up my arms like reverse freckles and my fingers have lost all pigmentation. I have patches of morphea on other parts too. I hope you can get used to seeing your wrists and arms looking a bit different.

Hi there! I have white spots some on my arms my legs and in my chest but my back is the worst I have a huge white spot on my back and it gets bigger. I have been to doctors but I don't think nothing helps and it is a part of scleroderma it does affect us differently some cases of scleroderma only affect the skin or outer tissues as they say. But some cases affect tissues and organs and that's the one I have. I also have Raynaulds among other issues. Maybe yours won't get as bad as mine I have light and dark spots and my skin is extremely irritated I do have lotions and creams that help but no cure.

That's interesting. I have some white patches on my legs and a few on my arms, i wondered why. Last year i grew a lump on my head, around the size and shape of half a large grape. Liquid nitrogen removed it, i wonder if that was related

Hi....I didn't get any lumps, but weirdly it went away after a couple of months. Now I have slightly darker patches which the docs have put down to a side effect of mycophenolate. I chose to stop it, but have been feeling good while taking it, everything is stable. I hope you're keeping well.🌻

Hello Wengc. I have those white patches. My skin may be a little lighter than yours so they don't worry me too much. However they are definitely there and look like white spots mainly around my wrists and forearm making the skin look mottled. I just ignore them and they don't worry me at all.
