Peritoneal Dialysis & insomnia

Hi guys.

I'm new to 'health unlocked', & am trying to resolve the problem of not being able to sleep during my nighttime transfer. I have been on PD for two years, the first 18 months of which worked with no problems at all, then I gradually started to have problems dropping off to sleep & staying asleep.I tried all of the recommended alternative solutions such as breathing techniques, blackout curtains, etc, etc. To no avail.

By the time I hadn't slept properly for weeks and was feeling terrible,I eventually both my consulted my GP & Nephroligist who both acknowledged that sleeplessness was not an unusual side effect of dialysis.

I was prescribed over many weeks numerous sedation & sleeping mediations (Zopiclone,Tamazapam,Amyltriptilene) etc, which only worked if I administered over the prescribed dosage

I am now sleeping which is wonderful, but am obviously concerned about dependence, and not feeling wide awake in the mornings

Does anybody have any helpful suggestions in respect to what I'm sure is not an unusual problem

My sister did PD and eventually HD. She took ambien for sleep.

She did not look ahead to the future, she knew she needed to sleep and that was the bottom line for her.

My mother was a HD patient. She was given Ativan to sleep.

I hope you find a balance. Lack of sleep it so tough both mentally and physically.
