How does everyone else cope with toothache?

i had toothache last week, and i have had on going problems for the past few years. until recently when i got diagnosed with Sjorgens syndrome i was unaware how it affected my gums and teeth and now know that i need to get great dental advice and help. i have been asked by the dental hospital to become one of their patients because it would help the students too.

anyway, i had to get a tooth removed last week, it was actually a crown, and the tooth below had cracked and was causing infection in the gum under the crown. It took 3 hours under anesthetic to remove the crown and tooth because i had a vein or blood vessel under the gum that had to be drained and once it had been drained it was amazing they were able to remove both without any pain. I did however sleep for 3 days solid with just a few moments awake long enough to drink some water, go to the bathroom and then take a pain killer.and back to sleep.. i am dreading getting toothache again.... how does everyone else cope?..xx

I just do my best to prevent such things by trying to maintain saliva in my mouth at all times using a variety of natural lozenges/herbs,etc. I haven't lost a tooth yet, but have had some fillings and was careful to avoid amalgam fillings. Cleaning the teeth becomes an art - something to take your time with when you have gingivitis - gently does it! After cleaning, a sea salt rinse is a good idea, or you can put a chunk of thick grain salt on your tongue, and let it dissolve, which will stimulate salive and fight bacteria. For more ideas, have a read of this website I've just published: naturesquared.wix.com/sjogr...

I have great respect for what you've been going through

Hi I still hve my own teeth and go to our local hospital for my tooth care. After trying many suggested toothpastes I now only use Baking soda. I heat my toothbrush under the hot tap to make it soft then dab it onto a little baking soda and clean my teeth. I then rinse with warm water. I do this morning and night and it seems to keep my mouth more neutral. I don't get ulcers any more which I put down to this regime and the taking of a Vitamin B supplement. Your dental people will tell you about mouth gels and tooth mouses all worth a try. Good luck with your future prevention work. Spice

Here's the toothpaste I prefer currently: jasonnaturalcare.co.uk/oral...

It contains baking soda and other healthy ingredients to help with the sensitivity. Likewise, I no longer get ulcers, I think due to this and the salt strategy.

do you also use the mouth washes?.

No. Back when I was first diagnosed I was doing flouride toothpastes and mouthwashes. Those mouthwashes from the supermarket had alcohol, so I stopped using them several years ago. As far as Biotene goes, I've only ever tried the geI, which is good, but can get expensive. I was using sensidine which has flouride in it until early this year. It was because I couldn't find an effective non flouride one for sensitive teeth, until trying the Jasons brand. I only started doing the salt trick several months ago, and that's when the ulcers stopped. I also made it my mission this year to get away from aspartame and found 'Nature's Sweet Life' peppermints and various other options I mention in my website, and have found my voice is behaving much better now.

cool..i guess it all about what is best for you and trying to suggest things to others eh?..

Yeah, we may all come under the banner of Sjogrens Syndrome, but each of our situations, and physical conditions are unique. It does take courage/time/money to try out different options, but my philosophy is while there may be no 'cure' according to Western medicine, prevention and improvement is always possible, and we can be our own scientists and share/discuss the results of our experiments ;)

Panadein Forte, and if after using toothpaste with mint in it, and that then makes you cough, just bear with a home remedy. I cannot use toothpaste anymore. Most people hate lemons , but it is great as a tooth cleaner and the best mouth wash. Just a small amount of freah lemon juice mixed with small amount of water, , brush your teeth and your tongue. Rinse mouth with water. Then lemon and water as a mouth wash or gargle. . It is sour, but it is magic.
