I have trait of sickle cell and was told that I probably could never travel to Colorado because of the high altitude and that I may get a shortness of breath being that I have sickle cell trait. Is this true and if so what's the worse that can happen

Firstly this is a UK based help group so we don't know about specific US based places.

Secondly a quick Google shows there is a Sickle Cell Association in Colorado. This means there will be people living with the condition in the area.

Finally with trait or the full disease you are advised not to go mountain climbing. This means don't climb Everest or similar where those without sickle cell realise the attitude has changed.

I have the trait and I moved there from Ga!!! It was an adjustment, but as long as you take walks daily when you first get there, to get your lungs used to the crisp air, you will be fine. Just always have water. I found that my ears were always popping or I would feel light-headed, but staying hydrated kept the dizziness away.
