I am CBoswell and I have a son with the trait. Just found out he has the trait. I just want to hear from others about what to expect.

The trait can be tricky because some times it can act like the full disease. Just make sure he does not over exert himself and that he drinks a lot of water. Be careful when he is out floors in the heat or cold this can bring on crisis.

Hello CBoswell! I have sickle cell trait and I have really bad chest pain because of it. My symptoms have manifest like someone with disease. Also I have been hospitalized for sickle cell trait, while in hospital I had low oxygen and an low hemoglobin and had to be given blood.

Symptoms of sickle cell trait and the complications are: low oxygen, low hemoglobin, hematuria, splenic fractions and others. Here some Websites that talk about splenic infraction in sickle cell trait-onlinelibrary.wiley.com sciencedirect.com-infraction in a child flying on plane commercial aircraft at low altitude. search.Proquest.com splenic infraction at high altitude those with sickle cell trait.

Also here are Websites that talk about Hematuria in sickle cell trait: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Hematuria: kidney-international.org story of a black woman 35 years who had sickle trait and hematuria. Hematuria is- when Red blood cells show up in urine. It occurs more in sickle cell trait individuals, hematuria can be trigger by planes rides, high altitude and intense exercise cardio workouts etc. Be aware that flying on planes can cause sickle crisis and problems this is one reason I don't fly on planes but I drive instead to close surrounding states. I hope this information helps you and your son.
