Treating recurrence with Doxil: Side Effects?

I am three years from the end of carboplatin and Taxol chemotherapy for my Stage 3 ovarian cancer. Prior to chemo I had a complete hysterectomy, omentectomy, appendectomy, and transverse colon resection. I now have a recurrence, with a tumor near the sigmoid colon and rectum. There is no surgery or radiation treatment they can do for this. I am being started on chemo again this week, but this time it will be carboplatin with Doxil instead of Taxol. Can those of you who have had Doxil please give me some first-hand info as to what side effects you had from the drug? I have read the printed info I was given, but would like to hear from actual patients. Thank you very much.

I received six rounds of doxil and carboplatin. I received liposomal doxil so I did not lose my hair completely, it just got thin. I had nausea. I took Zofran which seemed to relieve the symptoms. Constipation was an issue.CT scan after 6 rounds appeared to be good. I was put on an inhibitor. I was not able to take the normal dosage.

6 months later a PET scan showed progression.

Now I am on a different treatment. I took 1 round. My white blood cell count and platelets are too low, so I'm not able to take the new treatment until everything is brought back to the normal range. 💔

Had it alone. Watch out hands getting rough slather oils on them. Avoid putting them in hot water...use rubber gloves. Also I had brown spots on arms and chest.

Thank you for your response. I had Carbo/Doxil 3 days ago and so far am just extremely tired. I'm curious: did you lose your hair?

I found it quite tolerable. I had several days of nausea and fatigue and slathered hands and feet with lotion for the first week after infusion. My platelets tanked but always recovered in time for the next treatment. Good luck!

Thank you for responding to my inquiry. I had my first round 3 days ago and so far have been a little more fatigued every day. Every little thing is an effort. Haven't noticed skin problems yet. I hope the fatigue eases up as the days go by. Did you lose your hair?

No. I think my hair thinned and grew slowly. It had barely come in since frontline. Hopefully you will get over the fatigue after week one unless you’re anemic.

Hi Delia. Wondering if you had stomach cramps. Mine are so painful, I am beginning to wonder if I can handle this pain. I had my first carbo/Doxil infusion less than a week ago. If you had cramps, did they ease up over time? ThanksSashay

I have not had stomach cramps but have had constipation. I am now taking Miralax every day and that seems to keep things moving. I am now two eeeks out and am feeling generally well. Fatigue has eased considerably.
