Back home and safe from the NSW fires.

Well everyone. That was not the two week vacation/holiday I thought it would be.

We drove through the night last night to arrive home safely and get away from the fires that are all burning out of control here in Australia. Most roads were closed but for one. Which had already had a fire go over it the day before but to our right the fires were still out of control. We’d already spent New Years Eve in an evacuation centre.

My back and ribs could not take any more of the discomfort there. Then being put up in a two bedroom apartment with 12 people in the heart of a fire zone. It was one of the most terrifying unknown three days I’ve ever had. Our beautiful paradise that I’d booked for the family has been forfeited and at least now we are safe. Anyway. I’ve never been so glad to be home.

Love to all of you.

Thank goodness your home sounds like a really frightening time.

I’m so sorry all around. The media coverage looks apocalyptic. The deep red skies are awful. I wish you’d had a nice respite instead of such a scary venture. I’m grateful you’re home safe and sound.

Thank you all. Yes.

No words can describe the smell and the gagging of the smoke and heat. And the fear you can feel in the air. And witnessing a young girl being told her parents are both in hospital but okay. She cried out, “they are really okay?” I’d seen her wandering around in her dressing gown, a beautiful young tall adult/child.

I didn’t know her story and you don’t like to ask. I was only a holiday maker. Some of those people have lives there. It was truly an eye opener and something that makes me feel grateful for where I live and my beautiful comforts of home.

And I had my daughter and son beside me for most of the time. I was a lucky one.

🥺

I saw this on the nightly news here last night and confess it was the first I heard of it. So sorry that you have been dealing with something so harrowing when you were looking for some respite. Harrowing!

Thank God you are safe. It has been awful to watch the destruction these out of control fires. My heart breaks for the people and all the animals so terribly effected.

So thankful you are home safely! Watching the fires on the US news has been heartbreaking. Praying for all those animals & people suffering & dying in Australia 😭❤️🙏❤️

Thank you all. It was harrowing, and yes Avidbooklover, that thing of trying to find respite, and literally driving into an inferno. I feel thankful, but also very sad, seeing those cows sitting on still smouldering patches of ground driving through some already burned areas, and frightening smoke haze. Couldn’t open window, but didn’t want to use aircon, because it was not easy to find/buy petrol. No words can describe it. Yet we were only travellers. We didn’t lose our home. We are all alive. It feels like the whole world is in strife. I know California and Spain have had their fair share of it too. I think it’s a sign of the times. So sorry to be so morose. But I think we are in trouble everywhere. I wish I was as good as some of my friends and family who have gone totally vegan. That would at least make me feel like I was doing my best for the planet!

🥴🤔🥺

What area were you in? Where is your home?

Im in Coburg, Melbourne now Mimi. My home.

I was visiting a place called Murrah. NSW. My family came up the road from Tanja, near Tathra where their business is, which is under threat today with high winds and temps of 30 degrees Celsius. And or more. “It’s relentless,” said Mr. Doherty, a 41-year-old pilot from Idaho who flies for Coulson Group, one of the international companies contracted by Australian authorities for aerial firefighting services. “This is like a magnitude of five times what we’ve seen before.” A copy and paste from the news of a Canadian firefighters who have been sent here.

We’re we’re all evacuated to Bermagui, then evacuated from there to Narooma. No one knew what to do, where to go. Then we just decided in enough time not to get stuck, and drive out on the only road open, on the road we’d come in on, the alpine hwy, which was, and still is under threat. Get the hell out of there. I feel so lucky, but suffering survivor guilt right now and wish I could do something fo all the people, who live there.

I suppose I’ll just sent money. Stupid to think a person in my condition could do anything else.

See. We are all connected.

Oh Sandra. We are all so grateful. All the fires are merging. It’s too too horrible. I’m really constantly trying to wrap all these people in safe, soft light. How they do this job, and the volunteers who have not slept!

I have no words.

I’ve been reading the New York Times about the fires and have been worrying about the huge number of people affected. We have had fires near our summer home in Central Oregon so I have somewhat of a feel for what Australia is experiencing but nothing like the scale of your fires. When there is no place safe but on a boat, that’s pretty terrifying. And I think about the problems when the fire is out. Where do you go back to when so many homes are burned to the ground. How do you rebuild? I’m so glad you are home and comfortable, even tho your vacation wasn’t what you expected. Elaine

thanks everyone. I don’t want to take up anymore air space here on this topic. Just lovely to have all your thoughts head my way. But I’m fine now. Just worried about the rest of Australia. It’s going to be hard for all of us, and the planet, if we don’t get lots of trees planted.
