poppies

Driving home from the hospital yesterday I noticed some poppies, I stopped the car and walked up a lane and found 4 or 5 fields of beautiful red poppies!

I was supposed to be working at home but I had a few IT problems so rang the boss and told her I was finishing early and went back and had a lovely few hours capturing the beautiful red flowers. They looked so cheerful and vibrant that I thought It would be nice to share them.

From the picture you can't see how many poppies there were, but standing there I could turn a complete circle and there were flowers in every direction!

Yeah, about 50 in Orkney last night. London 60 right now. I’d wilt in the weather they are having on the continent. I’ll content myself with heather🤣

You should be ok 🙂 It was pleasantly hot today, though last week it was pouring with rain and I had the heating back on! Thankfully we seem to be missing the high temperatures that continental Europe are having! Fingers crossed we keep the sunshine without the excessive heat. Though Scotland is beautiful whatever the weather! Which is just as well really.

I actually like rain. I love storms. I don’t mind getting wet. I love the “mist” in Ireland. I have heard such rave reports on Scotland, I am sorry I waited until I had grey hair to go there. . I love anything Celtic. Moody, brooding landscapes, bagpipes, tin whistles and now I want to see “the hairy coos.” Yikes auto correct turned that into “hairy cops!”

I'm sorry to admit that I've only been to Scotland once but absolutely loved it, the countryside is so so beautiful. I always planned to go back, but haven't managed it so far. My husband has a serious reaction to insect bites (carries an epipen) and even when we went in May there were a lot of knats in the evenings, so isn't keen on returning. I think it was probably the part of the country we went to which was on the west coast with forestry and lochs. I got some fabulous pictures of the 'hairy coos' 😁

Just beautiful! Where were you? I’m an artist, and I want to paint them. Thank you for my painting subject ❤️.

Are you in the uk? They are on farm land next to the Blackstone nature reserve, Bewdley which is near Kidderminster in Worcestershire, England. If you paint from photographs I'd be happy to send you pictures to use, but I appreciate it doesn't match seeing them for real to paint. But I'm not sure how much longer they will be there as they were already starting to go over.

Julie, I’m on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. We have no fields of poppies here, nor lavender fields. I went on a painting workshop to Provence a few years ago and saw those beautiful flowers blooming. I’d like to see a few more of your photos. capemaggie@comcast.net. Thanks so much. Margie.

I'm in Connecticut. Lived on the Cape for a few years in Dennisport, West Yarmouth and Hyannis! I miss it.

I’m in Dennis, near the Cape Playhouse. We’re having a beautiful day, and the tourists are arriving in droves for the 4th of July. Did you have BC when you lived here? I was diagnosed 15 years ago and had a recurrence 7 yrs ago and again last year. I’m on ibrance and faslodex and still say I’m a survivor, but we all know that can change in a heartbeat. Stay strong and positive. Best to you.

mariootsi profile image
mariootsi in reply to capemaggie

I know where that is. You know when tourists started coming, it used to take me 45 min. to get to work! And the tourist season seemed to get longer!

No my life on the Cape was before any cancer.

I'm on the same treatment and do pray to stay strong and positive.

I wish the same for you! Take care and enjoy that wonderful place. I miss it.

Are you being treated on Cape or in Boston?

With apologies! I've finally managed to download and sort the pictures. I've emailed you a selection of pictures but if they don't come through let me know.

Hi Julie

I was born in Bewdley and my sister still lives there. Really lovely Riverside town.

The poppies looked stunning.

Bewdley is a lovely town. I grew up in stourbridge and would visit bewdley as a child. The river going through the town is beautiful and even better now the defences have been installed.

Did you feel like Dorothy in the ‘Wizard of Oz’...how gorgeous they are...lucky you to see all those together..unusual

We were in the Dordogne last year and lots of fields of sunflowers..nature can be overwhelmingly beautiful

It’s going to be a scorcher today...I’m going to a bbq tonight at our stables...should be fun...I love hot weather but not above 30 deg

I’m fortunate that having a waterbed I can adjust the temperature of it so it’s on cool for now...hopefully not too many hot sweats...ugh

It was just like that! 😊 I knew they reminded me of something! I asked the farmer and he confirmed that they were weeds in the crops because he hadn't sprayed.

it was too hot to sleep last night, a cool waterbed sounds heavenly!

We lost the water last weekend so I did the washing when I got home from work yesterday and put it out on the line (slovenly to have washing out at night according to my mother) but in the heat it's dried and is ready for ironing'.

Enjoyed your BBQ!

I rarely iron any longer but I can tell you I find it relaxing

blms profile image
blms in reply to Julie2233

Possibly peaceful for me because I come from a family of tailors and was taught at an early age how to properly iron. Maybe it’s that memory comfort thing

I loved sewing from a young age and learnt haute couture and tailoring at college where I was taught to iron and press properly 🙂

Hi Julie,

The poppies are beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing!

Julie2233 profile image
Julie2233 in reply to Purple60

They did! When I got my mbc diagnosis last year I stopped my photography - I do it for my own pleasure and there just didn’t seem any point in capturing memories that would only mean anything to me. Then I realised I was missing it and got my camera out again. I’ve realised that it’s not just about capturing memories but about enjoying today 😊 if I hadn’t been looking for photographs I would never have found this amazing spectacle driving home from the hospital 😊 it had already been s good day and this made it even better. Beautiful!

I have never seen a field of poppies - only pictures.

Where do you live?

Julie2233 profile image
Julie2233 in reply to NPmary

I live in England, on the border with Wales. I wouldn’t say it was a common sight but it’s not unusual in this area to see a field of poppies. It only generally happens when the farmer has planted a crop and then not sprayed the weeds off. Expensive for the farmer but beautiful for the rest of us!

We drove through Lincolnshire today and I commented to my hubby on how many poppies there seems to be this year. So pretty.

Wow natures beautiful and you've captured it perfectly. I read somewhere that it helps to heal if you take time to be at one with nature 2 or 3 times a week. My interpretation of that is it just soothes the soul - well it does mine anyway, just sort of gives an inner peace. Love to see all the vibrant colours. Thanks for sharing this. X

In an earlier reply I explained that after my mbc diagnosis I stopped going out with my camera, but I started again. Being out in nature and really having to concentrate on it to be able to take a picture makes me feel so much better and calmer. Sort of puts everything back into perspective.
